Mark Workman has been a successful lighting designer and tour manager in the music business since 1983. His list of past and present clients includes Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax, Testament, Machine Head, Dio, Danzig, Motorhead, Devildriver, Mudvayne, Dio, Queens of the Stone Age, Soulfly, Sepultura, Keel, Steeler and many others. As a lighting designer, Mark Workman has designed high-impact lighting performances for many music tours, including the infamous Clash of the Titans (Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax, Testament, Alice In Chains, & Suicidal Tendencies) in 1990/1991 and American Carnage 2010 (Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax & Testament), as well as for many music videos and live DVDs such as Machine Head’s Elegies DVD filmed at Brixton Academy in London, Megadeth’s Rust In Peace Live DVD shot at the Hollywood Palladium, Testament’s Dark Roots of Thrash Live DVD shot at the Paramount Theater in Huntington, NY, and Anthrax’s Live DVD, Chile On Hell, shot in Santiago, Chile. “Workman has provided priceless insight with his book which should be studied top-to-bottom by anyone looking to make their living in the business.” Chuck Billy, Testament "A witty and inspiring power punch." This book really does cover everything you need to know and the straight up and accessible manner in which it’s written actually makes for really enjoyable learning. Unlike most ‘text books’ that send you to sleep this one in chock full of funny anecdotes and lessons learned that keep you turning the pages. One can only imagine how many more stories Mr Workman has!

In this book, Workman, a highly successful lighting designer and music tour manager for legendary Thrash Metal bands like Testament, Slayer, Megadeth, and Exodus, shares his wisdom as a music industry professional, educator, and storyteller. His writing is shrewd, gritty, ingenuous, and insightful. Without doubt, these qualities, in part, have fueled a remarkable and enduring career in an industry where few have staying power, let alone eminent status. This wonderful book is recommended for anyone interested in the business of music tour management, concert production, and the siren call of Heavy Metal music and life on the road.

This book is well written, informative and very entertaining. I have been a fan of Metal Music since a friend made me a Metallica compilation tape in 1989 and have been hooked ever since.

While I personally have no desire to be a road manager, I was drawn to this book as a music fan because of my curiosity about how a tour works and was interested in the raw, gritty, honest insider's view that the author's 30+ years of experience provides. Mr. Workman delivered!! He details every conceivable aspect of a tour and delivers the message in terms totally understandable to an outsider like me.

I now have a complete understanding of how much goes in to preparing for a tour, how a tour runs and just how critical the role of a tour manager is. The anecdotes Mr. Workman provides had me laughing out loud, but ultimately the lesson is clear in each one.

I highly recommend this book to any music fan who is simply interested in life on the road. I have not been able to find anything other book that details a side of the music business that one rarely has an opportunity to see.

More importantly, if you interested in a career on the road, this book should be required reading!!

This is a must read book for anyone that aspires to be a tour manager or work as a crew member on a professional tour. The information is useful not only for touring musicians but for any entertainment tour, whether it's a professional sports tour or a fashion show. Additionally, this is very useful for anybody that works as a promoter, venue operator or provide support in the entertainment industry. If you are simply a fan of live music, this is a great behind the scene look at the life of a touring professional.
This is not a how-to book for dummies, it's a how to succeed book for professionals.

A rather nice book that will give some insight to what it is like to work as a tour manager. The writing could use some polishing, now there were many things that were repeated (with exactly the same words) in different parts of the books. Maybe some more real life examples could've made it a more interested read.
