B.J. blew me away. He just keeps kicking short fiction in the rear, making it run ahead clutching its ass, and then he runs up and kicks it some more, and the result is one of the most aggressively, insanely awesome debuts in a while -- Gary Shteyngart, author of Super Sad True Love Story Everyone knew that B.J. Novak was smart and sexy, but funny, too!? Wow, screw that guy. I haven't laughed at words this hard since I read -- Joshua Ferris author of The Unnamed and Then We Came to the End ONE MORE THING is a funny and inventive debut collection, infused with a deadpan absurdist wit reminiscent of Woody Allen and Ian Frazier. B.J. Novak's stories are sly and playful, but they can pack a real emotional wallop -- Tom Perrotta, author of Nine Inches Dark and hilarious, like the fudge Grandma used to make during her 'special' period. Deliciously funny! -- Jack Handey, author of Deep Thoughts and The Stench of Honolulu A funny writer with a great ear, but also a genuine storyteller with an observant eye and finely tuned emotional radar -- Michiko Kakutani New York Times

Kurzbeschreibung

A boy wins $100,000 in a box of Frosted Flakes - only to discover that claiming the winnings may unravel his family. An acclaimed ambulance driver seeks the courage to follow his heart and throw it all away to be a singer-songwriter. A school principal unveils a bold plan to permanently abolish arithmetic. A new arrival in heaven, overwhelmed by infinite options, procrastinates over his long-ago promise to visit his grandmother. We meet a vengeance-minded hare. We learn why wearing a red T-shirt is the key to finding love; how February got its name; and why the stock market is sometimes just . . . down.

Finding inspiration in questions from the nature of perfection to the icing on carrot cake, from the deeply familiar to the intoxicatingly imaginative, One More Thing finds its heart in the most human of phenomena: love, fear, family, ambition, and the inner stirring for the one elusive element that might make a person complete. The stories in this collection are like nothing else, but they have one thing in common: they share the playful humour, deep heart, inquisitive mind, and altogether electrifying spirit of a writer with a fierce devotion to the entertainment of the reader.

5.0 von 5 Sternen DON'T MISS THIS! 14. Februar 2014
Format:Audio CD
You may well want to listen to this alone or with someone who loves you very much because you’re going to frequently laugh out loud. B.J. Novak, known to many of us as the writer/actor/director of the hit TV comedy The Office has given us a hilarious debut with One More Thing. It’s a pastiche of what we experience as humans - love, hope, fear, acceptance, ambition and more. Novak is obviously one blessed with an outre imagination and the ability to surprise. The 63 stories and vignettes are short, sometimes a bit longer and all infused with insight and rare humor. I mean where else will you find that wearing a red T-shirt all the time just might help someone find love?

These pieces cover a vast range of places and themes. To do justice to each in addition to his own entertaining narration we’re treated to readings by Lena Dunham, Jenna Fischer, Mindy Kaling, Julianne Moore, Carey Mulligan, B. J. Novak, Katy Perry, Jason Schwartzman, Emma Thompson and Rainn Wilson. Each performance is a praiseworthy original.

Enjoy this rousing yet spot-on sensitive collection then share it with your friends - they’ll thank you for it.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Take a Ride on the BJ Train. Whoo-whoo!!! 8. Dezember 2013
Von John Lemut - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe|Vine Kundenrezension eines kostenfreien Produkts (Was ist das?)
I wasn't sure what to expect when I started reading B.J. Novak's book of short stories, ONE MORE THING. Actually, I guess I did have certain expectations. I expected a typical collection of a dozen or so short stories. There are more than sixty short stories in ONE MORE THING, ranging from just a few words to about 20 pages long.

And I suppose I also had expectations about the kinds of stories that would be contained in the collection, or about the style of writing. The very first story, "The Rematch," took those expectations and shook them up. It's a sly story about a rematch between the tortoise and the hare. That's all I want to tell you about it.

There is a humorous slant to these stories, but they're not just funny. There's a perspective to them that's creative and unique. They're well written, clever and are exactly as long as they need to be. None of them run out of steam before they are done and, just as importantly, none of them feel like they're ended just to be done with them. (The shortest ones are hit and miss for me, but I don't really have an appreciation for micro-fiction as it is. Perhaps in time.)

I wouldn't say there's a common theme throughout the collection, although some of the stories do relate to each other in subtle, fun ways, and many of them end with a satisfying punch or punch line. I feel like many of these stories began with a musing (some of the musings you, yourself, may have had before, and some you'll wonder why it hadn't ever occurred to you) and were deconstructed in order to be presented in a fresh way.

As I continued reading, I was frequently wowed with the subsequent stories. And then I came to "Kellogg's," a story with a long subtitle about a boy who wins $100,000 from a box of cereal and goes to collect his prize. This is my favorite in this collection and, instantly and undeniably, one of my favorite short stories of all time.

Drop whatever expectations you may have. Just start reading and let yourself sink into short fiction heaven. Or would it be "rise into short fiction heaven?" Whichever.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Nutty And Naughty. I Love The Way This Guy's Mind Works. 13. Februar 2014
Von Jeanette - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

I'm hesitant to give any specifics because B.J. Novak relies on the element of surprise to carry these pieces. The fun of reading the book is in being unaware of what new ways he will catch you off guard from one story to the next. Many of these pieces are not stories, but more like scenarios. I envy Novak's ability to say "What if ____________", and then come up with a bizarre way of filling in the blank with something we all wish we'd thought of.

Some of the pieces are just a line or two. They appear to be things B.J. Novak said to his friends off the top of his head and then recorded in a notebook for possible future use. For example: "I was sad that summer was over. But I was happy that it was over for my enemies too." The title for that one, The Walk To School On the Day After Labor Day, is almost as long as the piece it introduces.

Short story collections rarely get five stars from me because each story varies so much in quality and subject. Did I love everything in this book? No. There were some that fell flat for me, and some I just didn't get. But I was always eager to read the next one, and the next and the next, just to see where else Novak's nutty mind would take me. I laughed and I gasped and I found myself inspired to think more creatively. And THAT is worth five stars.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Not what I expected! 1. Januar 2014
Von J. Prather - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe|Vine Kundenrezension eines kostenfreien Produkts (Was ist das?)
I'm something of a novice when it comes to short stories. I don't read them very often, and when I do encounter them I often find them unfulfilling and overly literary. I was pleasantly surprised by this collection! While there doesn't seem to be any sort of connecting theme, they are most all very funny and hugely entertaining. Some are two short lines, such as "Kindness Among Cakes" where we learn that carrot cakes have the best icing - because they need it. Surprisingly that was one of my favorite moments.

This collection is certainly unique. We travel from a focus group deciding what to name a roller coaster; is it a Monster, The Monster, or maybe just Life, to a group of friends staging an intervention for a wayward buddy that doesn't go quite according to plan. Even when the stories turn out to be especially poignant, as both of those were, they still contain enough humor that you find yourself reading this book with a smile on your face even as it tugs at your heart.

I enjoyed this collection as I felt the author was able to achieve a literary sensibility without ever taking himself too seriously. He sets out to entertain us with a keenly observant eye on a wide variety of subjects and feelings, and delivers a memorable collection that will keep you turning the pages just to see where he can possibly go next.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Intriguing and wonderfully original 28. März 2014

This collection of short stories is brave, intriguing, outrageous, human and at times, completely bizarre. Also, there's a wonderful feeling of truth and outrageousness that is constant throughout. I love it and it'll definitely be a book I keep going back to over the years. I always knew BJ Novak was crazy intelligent and talented, but I couldn't have predicted how original and amazing this collection has turned out to be. I would have probably purchased it eventually, but after reading the critical praise upon its release, I ordered a copy right away. So glad, too, because I wouldn't want to have deprived myself of these wonderful, weird stories for any longer! I just love this book.

4.0 von 5 Sternen It's hard to review a book on humor, but this one is interesting and a fun read 3. Februar 2014
Von Joel Avrunin - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

Humor is so subjective that it is quite hard to write an objective review as to whether or not the book itself is worthwhile. Many might know that BJ Novak is best known for the character of Ryan on the hit show, The Office. Maybe don't know that BJ was also a writer on the show, so much of the funny dialogue was written by him. This book is a sampling of his wry wit, a collection of short stories that explore the limits of his creativity and humor.

As I read through the book, I found that the stories themselves in general were not laugh out loud funny. Chris Hansen at a Justin Bieber concert, Wikipedia Brown and the case of the Missing Bicycle, a man trying to find the girl he met at Trader Joe's - just random stories filling the book. Some are hit, some are miss, most are kind of interesting.

Do I recommend it? If you are a fan of BJ Novak (catch him in "Saving Mr. Banks!) and want to get a full idea of his repertoire, I recommend it. It reminds me of some humor by Steve Martin, but of course, nowhere near the level of the master. 4 stars.
