One Last Time is an account of the work of a 30-year-old psychic medium, written with a refreshingly upfront attitude usually rare in such books.

John Edward began having psychic experiences when a young child and by the time he was a teenager, people were asking him for readings. Before long he realised that he wasn't just getting psychic impressions from his clients, but was actually receiving messages from the dead. The title of the book comes from a conversation with his mother shortly before she died, when he said that people should be given "one last time to talk to the people in their lives"; it is this, he believes, that he is doing.

Edward is honest about his own doubts and his problems: "I never forget that I can always be wrong. What I do is full of ambiguity and inconsistency, and sometimes second guesses." Although he hears the spirits speaking to him, there are often problems in the communication: "If there was one thing I would ask the spirits, it would be to slow down and speak more clearly."

One Last Time is a warm and engaging read, totally lacking the often sickly pious preaching found in many other books about communicating with "the Other Side". John Edward is down-to-earth and straightforward and doesn't pretend to have all the answers. Looking back, John Edward now sees the early signs that he was destined to become an acclaimed psychic and medium. "There were times when I knew things I shouldn't have known," he writes. Eventually his gifts expanded into hearing the names of spirits "who'd gone to the other side." Finally, as a teenager Edward began to claim rather than question his psychic abilities and committed his life work to pursuing and learning about his gifts. Now that he has become a renowned medium (appearing on numerous talk shows, including Larry King Live), Edwards has written an entertaining "my life as a psychic" type of autobiography, packed with fascinating true stories. This book was wonderful. I recently lost someone I loved very much. Since my loss, I have become quite interested in life after death. John Edward's book was easy to read and very interesting. He comes across as the guy next door and that makes him seem very approachable. The stories he told not only renewed my faith, but made me realize that I WILL see my loved ones again. I can't praise John Edward and his wonderful gift enough. If you have EVER lost someone you will really appreciate this book.

Purchased "One Last Time" as a surprise gift. If you enjoy watching the "Crossing Over" program on Sci-Fi, this book is a "must read" accompanyment. But clear the decks, because you won't want to put it down. The background, insights, and stories are presented clearly in an easy-to-read style. As with the show, your emotions will span amazement, sympathy, hope, happiness, and understanding. And have someone available to share the stories as you go.

I read this book both before and after seeing him on the Sci-Fi Channel, and was impressed both times. No one who has seen him in action could seriously claim that he's a "cold reader"--he admits that he can occasionally misinterpret information given him by the departed. Truly, he's blessed with a gift. This book is open, witty, and sincere. My only caveat is that, personally, I wonder how therapeutic it is to contact the other side. But clearly there's a real need for what he does, and many people find it comforting. Well worth reading!

Even if you doubt "afterlife", this book will make you think
I got this book as a gift. It was very uplifting. I am not one who really does alot of thinking on the paranormal, but this really set the wheels-a-rollin in my head.
