Women writers have revolutionized Brazilian literature, and this impressive collection throws open a window on that revolution. Never before published in English, the stories assembled here reveal the remarkable power of Brazilian women's voices and the important contributions they have made to twentieth-century literature. Although these works of fiction are not patently political, they subtly reflect Brazil's evolution to democracy and openness. Several early writers deal with the manners and mores of bourgeois families, while others investigate the mother-child relationship. Later writers turn to the theme of erotic love. In the more contemporary pieces, narrative realism is superseded by a formal experimentation that employs surrealistic and self-reflexive writing and, in some cases, magical and 'postmodern' techniques.
