A tour-de-force pleasure of a first novel that takes a conventional love story and textures it with philosophical ruminations, ironic subtitles, and various sorts of playfulness, including pencil drawings. The narrator, on a flight from Paris to London, meets Chloe in the first chapter, ``Romantic Fatalism'': ``The longing for a destiny is nowhere stronger than in our romantic life.'' In each ironically titled chapter to follow (``Marxism,'' ``Beauty,'' Skepticism and Faith,'' etc.), the paragraphs are numbered, as de Botton develops his disquisition upon love and its limitations. Apothegms abound: ``If the fall into love happens so rapidly, it is perhaps because the wish to love has preceded the beloved....'' The narrator falls for Chloe, but even at the beginning, dishonesty enters the picture: ``What sides of myself should I release?'' The narrator, in fact, is a prevaricator, leaving the relationship to speculate upon various matters: ``Few things can be as antithetical to sex as thought.'' Soon enough, disillusionment sets in: Chloe, trying to read Cosmo, tells the narrator to turn down the ``yodeling.'' It's Bach. ``Understanding Chloe, I was like a doctor, passing hands over a body, trying to intuit the interior.'' Understandably, Chloe tires of such a creep, and the two practice ``romantic terrorism.'' (``Is there anything wrong?'' ``No, why, should there be?'') Chloe, unfaithful, leaves him to contemplate suicide--and ``The Jesus Complex''--before he finds Rachel and the whole thing starts again.... A dissertation/novel on romantic narcissism that's both intellectually stimulating and emotionally touching. A very promising debut. Chloe and Alain meet in a plane flying from Paris to London and fall in love. Their romance lasts only about a year, and after they have parted the narrator/author uses scenes from their time together as illustrations of his philosophical anatomy of romantic love. Chapters are formed of numbered paragraphs so that the book resembles a classical philosophical disquisition, and it's on this level that it reads best. First novelist de Botton writes well--dozens of sentences glisten with aphoristic insight--but neither Chloe nor Alain really engage our interest, and their story seems too slight to support all the heavy philosophizing. Recommended only for sentimental young romantics with a penchant for philosophy, readers who thought Nicholas Baker's Vox ( LJ 11/15/91) was profound, and writing teachers who need an example of what happens when you write a novel before you have much life experience.

On a flight from Paris to London, the narrator starts a conversation with a young woman called Chloe who happens to be sitting next to him. After their arrival, they meet again and subsequently start a serious love affair. But after some time Cloe loses interest and soon she confesses that she has an affair with the narrator's friend Will. The former falls into depression and then botches a suicide attempt while Cloe follows Will to the United States. But soon the narrator meets Rachel at a dinner party and she accepts his invitation to dine with him the following week.
The characters and the plot are lively and witty and there are plenty of passages in which Mr de Botton reflects on character, jealousy, passion and other emotions related to the feeling of love. There are quotations from and references to Nietzsche, Wittgenstein, Pascal, Stendhal, Freud, Roland Barthes and many other philosophers and writers. The whole novel is the work of both an erudite and witty author who presents the reader with lots of wise and illuminating insights. Perhaps not all of these insights are original but with so many famous names cited, they are organised in an original manner which is very entertaining to read.

This is like an intelligent "Bridget Jones Diary" written from the male perspective. I bought this book on a whim (judged by it's cover)in February of 1996 and since then I've probably re-read it five or six times and loaned it out to dozens of girlfriends. With humor and intellect the book describes all the facets of love and the joy and pain being in love brings. If you have ever been in a passionate yet failed romance this book will bring some strong flashbacks. Even though that might not be highly desirable unless you're hopelessly nostalgic like me, it makes you realize that insightful and sensitive men go through much of what women go through during the evolution of a relationship. And that I found immensely comforting. I have all of Alain de Botton's works and I savor each and every one of them. To me he is pure genius.

This book has been out now for about eight years and I was just given it by a friend; it strikes me it's a kind of minor classic of literature, that's going to have a sort of cult status, because it's not a book for everyone, and yet people who love it really LOVE it. It speaks directly to the heart. The author was a kid when he wrote it, all of 23, or even younger I guess because it takes time for a book to be published, and yet he was extraordinarily profound and perceptive. Sure, the book has some flaws, there are bits where you can see the author should have spent some more time; but it's really fascinating. Incidentally, I also recommend two other books by Alain de Botton: How Proust can change your Life (another cult book) and The Consolations of Philosophy
