Produktbeschreibungen

Amazon.co.uk

Interestingly this book starts with a useful insight into the failings of many schools of karate to cater for a more holistic approach in the tutelage of martial arts. Mark Bishop lived the martial arts life for 15 years on the Ryukyu Islands off Japan before returning to the UK in 1990. As a result he gained an extensive and expert knowledge in a cross section of oriental self- defence, meditative and manipulation techniques from Karate to Shiatsu. This has allowed him an enviably huge insight into Okinawan karate as a good health aid as well as of course a formidable tool of self-defence. The book delivers a fascinating insight into the origins of karate as a necessary aid of self-defence in an era some five centuries ago when weapons were outlawed in an effort to stop feudalism. An important point that readers with a background in Shotokan karate may be unaware of is that of lineage. Using historical tables the book painstakingly tracks the progress from the earliest practising masters of various schools of karate that lead to the emergence of the unique Okinawan style.

Beginners embarking on karate will find inspiration within these pages and will appreciate detailed illustrations including charts of striking points. The more seasoned martial arts practitioner will perhaps find the advanced practical and theoretic advice--especially the recommendations for developing "ki" energy circulation--the most valuable. This book doesn't provide quick or easy answers but will inspire, educate and improve the pupil's health, fighting performance and perhaps most significantly give an understanding of the Okinawa heritage that they are part of. --Tony Martin -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine vergriffene oder nicht verfügbare Ausgabe dieses Titels.

Mark Bishop has written a geneological history of most, if not all, of existing karate styles that have their roots in Okinawa. Though his work is not sourced and footnoted as is customary in academic writing, he does indicate that his information comes from interviews with karatedo masters in Okinawa, and presumably these interviews were conducted in the masters' native language. Since the vast majority of martial arts "history" is oral, and his book is so detailed, I find his accounts quite credible. In this book, Mark Bishop has done a good job of conveying the commonalities of all karate styles, despite the efforts by some to differentiate and mysticize them. Bishop should also be commended for debunking the frequently told myth that martial arts began in Okinawa when weaponless peasants developed fighting techniques to counter the aggression of Japanese samurai. He also presents his interview subjects as real people -- some of the karate masters he interviewed struck him as slightly bombastic or secretive, while others came across as humble and eager teachers. Instead of editing these impressions out he includes them.

This is not the book for people with little or no experience in the martial arts looking for a guidebook so they can learn how to win bar fights. The book is most valuable as a historical reference.

An encyclopedia of karate .. 23. September 2009
Format:Taschenbuch
If one has to characterize Bishop's 'Okinawan Karate', it is best described as encyclopedia of karate. This is because Bishop not only aims for a description of the different branches, but also--successfully--establishes a genealogy of karate, which takes the interrelations of styles, its particularities as well as its representatives into consideration. Moreover, Bishop's endeavor is not only based on hearsay and citation; its special value comes from the empirical research and interviews conducted by the author on Okinawa. Henceforth, Bishop's work can certainly claim special authenticity.

This, however, is not the only value of Bishop's book. It is also the latitude as well as depth of information provided by the author. This makes this work a good starting point for further research into the history of karate--or, which is equally important, supports the practitioner of karate to find the most adequate style for himself. For instance, Bishops nicely demonstrates that karate does not only consists of kicks, strikes, or punches, as most people might believe; it has also incorporated a vast array of joint locks, throws, and other techniques of grappling. This certainly helps to understand that karate in its traditional form is an all-encompassing fighting art.

Moreover, Bishop's work is not only interested in its presentation of technicalities. He also provides portraits of the different teachers of karate and their unique characteristics. This is important--at least, I believe so--to understand and feel the essence of different styles and approaches to karate. In short, it gives additional life to Bishop's treatise.

In sum, I would highly recommend Bishop's publication to all practitioners of karate or readers, who seek an all-encompassing introduction to karate. Moreover, 'Okinawan Karate' further deserves 5 stars for the quality of the empirical research conducted by Bishop. A definitive must-have.

Format:Taschenbuch
I found this book to be an excellent introduction to all of the martial arts in Okinawa. Mr. Bishop tries to write something about all of the differrent styles, their techniques and the lineage. Dates are given where possible with photos and skecthes where necessary. Very entertaining read.
