Produktbeschreibungen

Amazon.co.uk

Odd Thomas is one of Dean Koontz's more heavily moralised horror thrillers, but is nonetheless charming and terrifying. Odd is an adolescent on the brink of adulthood who sees dead people and has a worryingly precise moral sense; the police chief of the small town of Pico Mundo--little world--relies on him heavily. Hardly has the book opened before a dead teenager leads Odd to her killer--and we are given to understand that this is the sort of thing that happens all the time. He does not just see the dead, however; he sees the thrill-seeking dark spirits that hang around unpleasant events, and he notices, on this particular day, that there are a lot more of them about than usual. Odd is haunted by dreams of dead bowling-alley staff and he wonders whether this might just be the day when the bowling-alley massacre takes place.

The tone of voice here is almost saccharine, almost sinister--Odd and his friends and his sweetheart are vivid, cute and self-righteous. This is a bizarrely paced thriller because it follows the vagaries of an eccentric with his own ways of investigating things--it is as odd as its hero's name. --Roz Kaveney -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine andere Ausgabe: Gebundene Ausgabe .

From Booklist

His name really is Odd, but many would call anyone odd who sees ghosts and harbingers of mayhem called borachs, and who homes in on mass murderers by means of PMS--that's psychic magnetism syndrome, according to his luscious girlfriend, Stormy (not her real name). Few others, however, know of his capabilities, which suits the Pico Mundo (California) Grille's 20-year-old short-order cook just fine. He would be better off without his gift, for, as he says, when he sees dead people, he does something about it. That gets him, and nearly all his fellow Pico Mundians, in deep, hot water after a big, pasty creep Odd at first dubs Fungus Man comes into the Grille. Borachs teem around the guy, whom Odd connects immediately to his recurrent, seemingly premonitory nightmare about mass murder. Odd has to follow him, and his pursuit occupies the rest of Koontz's corker of a new thriller, his best since Intensity (1996) and Dark Rivers of the Heart (1994). We are at Odd's elbow throughout, for Koontz adopts, rather unusually for him, first-person narration, and Odd is the kind of instantly and persistently likable narrator that Fredric Brown used in such detective classics as the Ed and Am mysteries (collected in Hunter and Hunted, 2002), though the pace of a Brown novel is relaxed in comparison. Also like Brown, Koontz employs dry, goofy humor, often in daring counterpoint to the story's spikes in tension and horror. Koontz also waxes as honorably sentimental as Ray Bradbury, and writes in breathy, two-line paragraphs, recalling the punchy manner of Robert Bloch. Obviously, then, this is a book worthy of any of the great three Bs of pop fiction. Ray Olson

20-year-old Odd Thomas, a fry cook, lives in Pico Mundo, CA and believes that he and his love Stormy are destined to be together forever because of matching birthmarks and a carnival fortune-telling machine card. However, their very lives are threatened by a sinister man to whom Odd's sixth sense is alerting him - his "gift" of seeing dead people and dark shadows which he calls bodachs.

Written from Odd's perspective, the reader is immediately transported into the main protagonist's world of Pico Mundo. It's a strange, an odd one indeed - and still highly fascinating. In a way, it's not like reading - it's like listening to a talented storyteller. Koontz manages to keep the reader's interest from the first to the last page, creating some intriguing and unique characters. All in all, "Odd Thomas" is a supernatural thriller with lots of class.

HE SEES DEAD PEOPLE... 30. Juli 2009
Von Lawyeraau
Format:Taschenbuch
With this book, the author introduces one of his more memorable characters, Odd Thomas. Readers of this book will be richly rewarded, as the character is engaging and the story is well-plotted. Odd Thomas is a twenty year old fry cook in a small California town called Pico Mundo. He has an apartment, a job, and a beautiful girlfriend, Stormy Llewellyn. He also has a special gift. He sees the dead. Trust me, according to Odd, Elvis is indeed dead.

When a mysterious stranger arrives in Pico Mundo, Odd knows that something very bad is going to happen in his beloved town. He know this because, whenever evil is about in full force, shades from the netherworld begin to appear in droves. Suddenly, Odd sees these shades wherever he looks, and it does not bode well for Pico Mundo. Odd has only a short window of opportunity in which to avert a cataclysm in his home town. With the aid of his very smart girlfriend, Stormy, he hopes to do just that and right what seems destined to go wrong.

This tale of the battle between good and evil will draw in the reader. Filled with wry humor, compelling characters, genuinely creepy moments, and an interesting plot, this book kept me turning the pages until the very end. It also has an unexpected twist and turn at the end that took me completely by surprise. Those who enjoy paranormal thrillers will definitely enjoy this one and be taken with its main character, hook, line, and sinker.

This book is stylistically so different from others I've read of Koontz that it really surprised me.
It is a highly recommended read. The language is not one of "run-of-the-mill" bestsellers but more like the classical American authors - I guess the best word I have for it is "eloquent".
I was bothered once in a while by the way Odd communicates - on the one hand Koontz is successful in making him seem like his age (20), at other times he speaks and thinks about topics in a way that even a twen with a talent like his likely would not. It isn't enough of a bother to warrant a downgrade to a four-star book, though.
