I couldn't put it down! 13. Oktober 2009
Von ham1299 - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch
Another absolutely riveting installment in The Riyira Revelations series! We are now halfway through the entire series, and I cannot wait to see where it's going. Once again, Michael J. Sullivan did not disappoint. There was suspense, humor, action, treachery, and even a tiny bit of love thrown in.

I found that I was able to guess what was going to happen in a couple of instances. I suspect that it was not a problem with the story, rather a familiarity with Royce and Hadrian. This being the third book about these central characters, I feel like I "know" them and can guess what they're thinking. I think that is why I was able to figure out what they were going to do a couple of times. This speaks volumes of Sullivan's abilities as an author. To have characters that readers can learn so well is pretty impressive. They are well-rounded and very consistent from one installment to the next.

Getting back to Royce and Hadrian, I loved the exchange while they were imprisoned in Hintindar. I thought Hadrian's revelation regarding Royce was touching.

The ending is a bit of a cliffhanger, and I do wonder what "the truth" is and whether Royce and/or Hadrian learn it in time. I will be waiting impatiently to get my hands on the next book in the series to see how this all plays out!

Another solid addition 3. Dezember 2010
Von Robert "Dimndbangr" Hicks - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch
Nyphron Rising is the third book in the Riyria Revelations. The first book is The Crown Conspiracy, the second is Avempartha, with the fourth being The Emerald Storm, the fifth book-Wintertide, and sixth and final book-Percepliquis having a tentative release sometime in April 2011.

Nyphron Rising is another self-contained fantasy story with ties to The Crown Conspiracy and Avempartha through a larger plot. The main plot focuses on Royce and Hadrian as they escort Princess Arista on a diplomatic mission. Some subplots involve the Empress of the Nyphron Empire, background on Royce and Hadrian's characters, a town as they deal with the Imperialists, a love interest and a few others.

The pacing in this one begins a little slow, but not too badly and picks up nicely at the end. The character development is done really well and enhances each character wonderfully. This is one of the highlights of this book. Even the secondary characters are given more of a spotlight so as to feel a significant part of the story without overshadowing the main characters. This book was also very detailed. The visuals were stunning albeit maybe a bit over detailed in certain areas, but the author's vision is definitely portrayed very well and the majority was given the perfect balance of just enough so the reader can get the vision and fill in the rest providing an ownership to the story. The story flowed rather well and kept the plot moving along. There were only a couple spots where I had to re-read a section to figure out how people ended up where they were; a bit more on that later.

Some criticisms:

1. For a stand alone novel in a series, this one had me a bit lost in the beginning since there are many references to the past books, more so to Avempartha. I wish I had had re-read it to keep it fresh in my head when venturing into this one. It definitely took me a while to remember what was relayed in that one, especially at the end of it.

2. Most of the book had character actions go nice a smoothly. There are, however a couple times where I had to re-read a section because I felt I missed something. An example is, there is a part where the characters were traveling in a town and the next thing I know, they are in a tavern. What happened to the horses? When did they enter?

Some Positives

1. Mr. Sullivan has become a master of intrigue and betrayal. Though there is not much action happening in this one, the intrigue is a high point and is pulled off successfully. Though some aspects are predictable, there are still a lot that are not and the betrayals are pulled off nicely.

2. As I said before, the characters are wonderfully crafted and get better with each subsequent book. They develop in ways that fit their characterization and keep the reader wanting more of them. Not just the main characters, but the side characters are just as well detailed and have a history of their own.

3. The dialogue is also spot-on. Each character is given their own voice and it is easy to distinguish their different personalities. The banter back and forth is well done and not overly used.

4. There is a character who is learning magic by trial and error. The best part is the development is not learned quickly; and also there are things that get out of hand a bit. It was really refreshing to see a character learn how to do something and then not become an expert at what they do all of a sudden. Even though the character is well versed in the philosophy and theory of magic, there is more to it than that as the character discovers.

For me, this was not the best book in the series so far, but it does have its own merits and keeps those who have already gotten this far wanting more and looking forward to the next book. This is a self-contained story and if there is a reference to previous books, there is sufficient information to keep the reader informed about those books. I would highly recommend starting with book one, but that is not a necessity for the overall enjoyment of each book. One main thing about reading them out of order is the fact that there will be spoilers to the previous books and that is the main reason for recommending starting at book 1. Another reason is there is a bigger plot that forms throughout the series to go along with each episode and it keeps getting better and better. I recommend this to fans of fantasy and if you would like to try reading fantasy, Mr. Sullivan is a great author to start. If you are more into the dark fantasy, I still would recommend this series, but go into it with an open mind as it is not very dark, but a well worthy read.

Happy reading

Straight-up action/adventure done fantasy style 21. Mai 2010
Von Greg - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
Now that the Imperialists have a puppet for their throne, the war for conquest has begun. Knowing that Melengar cannot stand against the Imperialists' might, Princess Arista employs Royce and Hadrian to escort her on a self-imposed mission. While working for the princess, Royce has his own agenda: to secretly investigate Hadrian's past to determine if what the wizard Esrahaddon has told him about his friend is true. This secret has the potential to topple the powers of Elan.

Nyphron Rising, the third book in The Riyria Revelations, is another consistently entertaining installment. Some interesting new characters are introduced that add a little more depth to a story that's been, up to this point, a comparatively light read.

As enjoyable as epic fantasy can be, many times the sheer fun of it all gets lost in complexity. Enter Michael J. Sullivan and his Riyria Revelations. This series is a straight-up action/adventure done fantasy style, and "there ain't a darn thing wrong with that."

Mr. Sullivan brings back a type of story that's had very little presence in this genre in the last twenty years or more. I, for one, wish him much success and hope his career is a long one. Making swashbuckling tales popular again creates more excellent choices for fantasy readers.

Arista's story...the quality continues in this 3rd book. 19. Januar 2011

Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
"Nyphron Rising (the Riyria Revelations)" is the 3rd of a six book fantasy/adventure series by Michael Sullivan. This hard copy edition is $14.95 and is 372 pages in length while the Kindle e-edition is $4.95 and is a 578 Kb download.

The church (or at least the powers that run it) have decided that the world would be a better place if it was entirely under their rule, and to keep themselves out of the spotlight (in case things go awry) they have appointed a puppet leader, in this case the Empress Modina (formerly Thrace) to act as their token figurehead. The only opposition is young King Alric in the northern province of Melegar and a rag-tag band of 'Nationalist' in the south. And while Royce and Hadrian have in integral part to play in the overall scheme of things, this tale's main focus is about the coming of age of Princess Arista (King Alric's sister) and her education in the art of political diplomacy and clandestine plotting.

Again as with the first two novel, a great story...well told. Interesting characters, plot twists, great battles and the all important realism factor in that not everything planned, turns out well. Bad things can and do happen in unexpected and cruel ways.

1.) The maps...almost unreadable with the Kindle app. I had to go to an internet site and print off a map to make sense of where the places were that were mentioned in the story.
2.) Early in the novel, author Sullivan makes Princess Arista look very childish with her inability to remember the name of her new bodyguard. I had real fears for this tale when this seemed to be a reoccurring theme for several pages. However, this was quickly passed-by and the rest of the book was a great read.

A story that is immensely entertaining to read. The author has that knack of writing a great tale and then populating it with interesting persons and unexpected, but plausible, twist and turns. One of those books that you look forward to finding a few extra minutes to get in a little more reading. 4 1/2 to 5 Stars.

Volume 3 Opens Up the Riyria Revelations to the Grand Stage 15. Januar 2010
Von Alex C. Telander - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch
Things take a turn for the worse in the third installment of The Riyria Revelations - after Crown Conspiracy and Avempartha - as war comes sweeping through to Melengar and its people have little hope and respect for their recent, young king. Princess Arista has been running around playing diplomat and trying to secure allies for Melengar, with nothing to show for it. Meanwhile the enemy Nyphron Empire continues to grow in strength and numbers. Arista has one more trick up her sleeve, and with the help of her good friends, Royce and Hadrian, goes on this last journey far south in a last effort to secure an ally, but also to unravel a mystery of Hadrian's past. Surprising results are revealed about our unknown thief that ties into the whole story of the Riyria Revelations. The wizard Esrahaddon continues to be up to no good, while we learn more of the enigmatic man known as Degan Gaunt.

Sullivan does a great job with Nyphron Rising, after setting necessary groundwork and story and setting with the first two books, he opens it up on a epic scale, traveling his invented world, and educating readers on how future events are going to affect everyone across Elan, and why the forgotten history is important. Royce and Hadrian continue to be the entertaining and interesting characters that they are, while Arista opens up her emotional side. Nyphron Rising ends on a sort of cliffhanger, leaving readers wanting to know more, which will be resolved in the fourth installment, The Emerald Storm.
