I recently purchased two guide books, this one and the Little Black Book of San Fran, for my one week visit there. I recently returned and can now reasonably sum up the test drive results for each book. While I like the comprehensive nature of this book and I've always respected the NFT brand, personally I found that it tried to cover too much logistical information at the expensive of actually expressing opinions. As an example, instead of telling you the best 5 restaurans in a neighborhood to grab lunch or dinner at, it tried to rattle through all 30 with very brief or no remarks on each one. The maps are excellent but I found myself using my smartphone with Google maps, Yelp, Opentable regularly instead of opening this book. For stronger editorial opinions and quick summaries of where to go and what to do in each neighborhood, I found the Black Book very helpful and the advice current and trendy. So if you don't have a smartphone, needs maps and more comprehensive logistics information, this book will be helpful. If you're looking to stroll through San Fran leisurely and want some selective editorial advice to guide you in each neighborhood you visit, bring your fully charged smartphone and consider another book that has a more editorial nature. I would have considered 4 stars but the substantially higher price of this book compared to others (about 20-25% more expensive) also docked it a point in my book. Good travels!
