Kurzbeschreibung

Buddy Holly was killed at 22 when the plane he was travelling in crashed on 3 February 1959. Although this was less than two years after Holly's first hit record, Don McLean described this as 'the day the music died.' But Sonny Curtis, Holly's friend and musical colleague, told us that the music didn't die, because 'Buddy Holly lives every time you play rock'n'roll.' Fifty years after Holly's death, his lasting influence is clear; a musical based on his life seems set to run for longer than his lifetime and artists as diverse as Blink 182 and Bob Dylan call him an inspiration. The Beatles chose That'll Be the Day by Buddy's group The Crickets as their first attempt at recording, as well as taking the idea for their name. Clearly, the music didn't die!John Gribbin, an ardent fan since he was twelve, presents this labour of love written in the spirit of Sonny Curtis' lyric, as a celebration of Holly's all too brief life, and as an introduction, for all those not around in 1959, to the man and his astonishing musical legacy. "Not Fade Away" also includes - uniquely - a full and detailed account of every Holly recording session, which any Buddy fan will devour.

I Knew Buddy. Great Book. Wrong about Lubbock 31. Januar 2009
Von Johnny Hughes - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
Texas Poker Wisdom

This is a fun read. He has lots of little details, especially about England. I am from Lubbock. I have just a ton of research on Buddy Holly, who I knew, played poker with, and watched perform often. I have just written an article entitled Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Joe Ely, and the Cotton Club [...].

Buddy started recording in Lubbock in 1949. We were on the same kid's talent contest/radio show. He had the run of two radio stations and could record often 1953 to 1958. The book is wrong about the Holley family, who were not poor at all, given the times. I interviewed Larry Holley for my article. The book is wrong about Lubbock and rock 'n roll. Lubbock was a rock heaven. Buddy had a radio show as a teen. Two other teen DJs had shows. All the early greats of rock played here: Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Little Richard. Buddy fronted Bill Haley, and Elvis many times. Lubbock is not some backward hick town. Lubbock loved and supported Buddy Holly!

A delightful surprise 17. Januar 2009
Von Charlie T. - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
Most of the books I read are connected with science, and I'm a long-time fan of John Gribbin's work. But I also listen to 50s & 60s music for relaxation, so it came as a big surprise to find that Gribbin had written a biography of Buddy Holly. I opened it up with some trepidation -- what could a science writer know about Buddy Holly? -- but I was hooked from the first paragraph, where Gribbin establishes his credentials as a 13-year -old fan of Holly in 1959. This book is a delight, clearly a labour of love from somebody who knows just about everything there is to know about the man and his music. Gribbin's passion for his subject shines through, and Holly himself comes across as a likeable young man driven by his passion for music. I especially liked the way Gribbin explains the roots of Holly's music, in terms of bluegrass, country and western, and R&B. He rightly doesn't dwell too long on Holly's tragic early death, but moves on to describe his continuing influence on the music there after right up to the present day. This is definitely the best rock biography I have ever read. Maybe Gribbin should give up the science and concentrate on this!

Mediocre and inaccurate 5. März 2009
Von F S Frederick - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe|Von Amazon bestätigter Kauf
This book is short, ho-hum, and inaccurate. Nothing new here. But there are 3 major flaws.

First, Gribbin uses Ellis Amburn's extremely inaccurate book as a source.

Second, the author does heavy duty bashing on Norman Petty and his supposed greed. It has been proven in recent years (by Bill Griggs) that Norman Petty did not keep money from Buddy Holly & the Crickets; the record company, etc., did the shortchanging.

Third, Gribbin makes no mention of having contacted and gotten assistance from Bill Griggs, the eminent and long time Buddy Holly historian, who lives in Lubbock, Texas.

If you are interested in Buddy Holly, etc., I recommend reading THE definitive biography of him, "Remembering Buddy" by John Goldrosen & John Beecher. My favorite book about my favorite person.

Also recommended is "Ritchie Valens the First Latino Rocker" by Beverly Mendheim.

About the Last Tour, I recommend "The Day the Music Died" by Larry Lehmer.

In DVD, get "The Real Buddy Holly Story" put out by Sir Paul McCartney.
