Über den Autor
Mette N. Handberg has been a prominent textile artist in Norway for more than 40 years. She is the author of Strikk til Småfolk and was a featured artist in Norwegian Knitting Designers. She was also a designer for Dale of Norway and designed the official sweater for the 2006–2007 U.S. Ski and Snowboard Teams.

Wunderschöne Muster, die typisch norwegisch sind.
Sehr gut erklärt mit großen bunten Skizzen.
Im Anfangsteil wird Technik erklärt und Hilfe gegeben bei kleineren Problemen.
Viele Modelle sind auch für größere Größen ausgelegt.
Tolle aufwändige Pullis, Westen, Mützen und Handschuhe gestrickt mit mehreren Farben oder auch
einfarbige schlichte Teile lassen keine Wünsche offen.

Beautiful Intricate Patterns for Experienced Fair Isle Knitters

Although I may never knit any of the intricately patterned garments in this book, I absolutely love looking at the beautiful photos. With this book, the design on the dust jacket is absolutely representative of the many lovely included designs, and is not necessarily the most attractive design in the entire book.
Clearly, this is a pattern book for experienced Fair Isle knitters. Most of the garments are knit at gauges of 22-25 stitches and 28-30 rows to 4 inches, which is an absolute necessity when there is so much fine patterning detail. Also, many of the designs have different patterning in different areas of the garment, so that the knitter will have to refer to more than one chart when knitting the design (take a look at the dust jacket design, which has a patterned panel in front and a lattice pattern elsewhere; and, if you have time, make use of the "Look Inside This Book" feature to see more).
However, the author has included a few relatively simple patterns that don't require charts. Both the "Roll Collar Sweater" and the "Cozy Sweater" are knit in plain stockinette with minimal color accents added along the seams.
The book starts with a few pages on "Techniques" (e.g., cutting steeks, finishing the facings, small split necks, sewn loops) and "Correcting small problems and mistakes" (e.g., knitting too tightly, loose shoulders, buttonholes are too tight, stranding across too many stitches). In addition, there are a couple of informational pages on "Selbu Knitting" and on knitting "From West Norway". Among other things, the "From West Norway" page discusses the "plastron", which is a knitted and embroidered "ornamental frontispiece" for a woman's dress or dress shirt front. The final pattern in the book is for a cap and wristlets that teach the plastron techniques.
My personal favorite pattern is the amusing "Moose", which uses an allover moose motif for the body, along with a Norwegian rose border at the bottom and cuffs. However, I also like the innovative designs that incorporate knitted "straps", side openings with button bands, and applied woven ribbons. And there is a pretty pattern for "White and Blue Cotton Tops" that uses texture (purl stitches on a stockinette background) instead of color to produce diamond patterning.
My only criticism is that the complex charts do not use conventional knitting symbols. The charts are printed in full color. This makes them attractive to the eye, but also makes them hard to copy for personal use while knitting unless one has access to a color printer.
Adventurous knitters who are not quite ready to tackle such complicated patterns, might want to take a look at Lucinda Guy's Northern Knits: Designs Inspired by the Knitting Traditions of Scandinavia, Iceland, and the Shetland Isles.

good color charts, must be experienced, or better

I have been knitting fair isle for about six years following Ann Feitelson's books with absolutely no problems. Infact I knitted one fair isle hat (from another sorce) and then knitted one of her sweaters, followed by two others and three vests. With all that under my belt and first prize at the state fair, I finally found a pattern that I was going to knit for myself: the men's jacket from this book. I am so glad that I knitted many other fair isle patterns before and have Ann's books to refer back to for everything that this book leaves out. If I were to follow the pattern that is given exactly ("Man's Jacket") I would end up with a huge sock! There is no mention about putting stitches on a holder, or at least making a steek that you can later cut up to actually create a hole so that a sleeve can be made. I had to go to Feitelson's books to reference her multiple patterns to see how many stitches go on a holder, and also how many to decrease. Now I am to the decreases for the neck, and am absolutely fed up with having to create my own pattern as I go! I have thankfully knitted many other sweaters like this and will make it work, however I really think that it this would be a very disheartening first attempt for most people. Given the lack of instructions I think that only the color charts are good, and those you can get for free or from buying other books that give you very many other options for color charts. Please be advised, read the instructions before you buy this book, you will see they are very very incomplete.

Just got my copy of this fabulous book. While I wouldn't be interested in the plainer, non-colorwork patterns in this book, I find the classic Norwegian fair isle designs breathtaking. The cover coat pattern is worth the price of admission! I own a ton of Norwegian knitting books. This one is definitely in the top two or three.
