Kurzbeschreibung

In the spring of 2011, Mycroft Pilsner Wellington, storied restaurant reviewer for the vaunted Wellington-Bloomwell Guide, was forced, largely against his will, to conduct his very first culinary tour of America. When excerpts from his daily diary entries appeared as part of The Guide's on-line promotional series, readers thrilled to the unexpectedly riveting tale of a man constantly at war with his colleagues, his surroundings, and even his own haunted dreams.

The full set of entries was published in the Travelogue section of the 2012 guide, and became an instant classic in his native Great Britain. Now, two years later, this much-anticipated three-volume set marks the first time the complete text of all forty-two diary entries has been fully translated into American English for the enjoyment of a whole new audience of readers.

Really liked the basic premise of this book. But the end left me with mixed feelings. Like the other commenter I would be a little afraid that the next book is more about romance and family etc. but I trust the author here and maybe we'll be happily surprised. OTOH the current run should probably not get stretched to far, who wants to read 3 identical books? ;-)

4.0 von 5 Sternen Laugh-out-loud funny! (...with a heart of gold?) 12. Juni 2014

I really enjoyed this amusing tale and look forward to the next volume. It's the story of an insanely particular food critic (Mycroft) who revels in a verbal orgy of arrogance as he is repeatedly presented with less than perfect circumstances (i.e. life). It's ostensibly a fish-out-of-water story as he is plunged into the ultimate affront via a road trip abroad in America. Ripe for comedy, no? Yes!

The book digs right in with the effusive ranting of our hero and quickly establishes the magnitude of both his ego and the coming train wreck of the road trip. We are introduced to Mycroft (and his figment/proxy of a sidekick) through a series of vignettes and recollections where the comedy is all in the forensic dissection of endless minutiae. Imagine an Oxford-bred Andy Rooney with rapier command of the OED. The stage is nicely set for disaster.

For me the ultimate fulfillment of the comedic promise occurs in a scene in the Grand-Guignol of American eateries: the Rainforest Cafe. It's laugh-out-loud funny and is reminiscent of the pacing and direction of one of Jean Shepherd's better short stories. This episode occurs about midway through the book and it is after this event that our hero enters a fugue state. The story bifurcates into alternating chapters as Mycroft seeks comfort in an allegory of his life in the form of a child's fable. The book takes a turn for the sentimental and sadly leaves most of the comedy behind. At this point I felt that the story completely lost steam (I understand this is Part 1) and I was rather discouraged by the unfortunate foreshadowing of a romance(?!), never mind that the presumed romantic interest is given the barest of character dimension.

I bought in for the comedy and hope that the future volumes deliver more of the straight-up hijinks and less of the grand web weaving (call me simple). If our hero is humanized and we get lost in some romantic arc then I'm not sure what the ultimate work is trying to be. I really don't want it to turn into "When Harry Met Sally" and would rather it end without any sort of redemption (think Basil Fawlty). Nonetheless, if you are simply a fan of the artistry of the written word then there is a sumptuous lot to enjoy here.

The meticulous translation from the Queen's English to American English is a credit to Muratori's talent. The author's humour is well-rendered throughout the volume, and I eagerly await Volume II.
4.0 von 5 Sternen Laugh-out-loud funny in parts 12. August 2014

Laugh-out-loud funny in parts, touching in others. The story of an anal-beyond-belief restaurant critic sent abroad to America plunges us into the protagonists arrogant view of the world, where he is at its center. His pedantry is maddening, but amusing. The story changes pace a bit as the character's adventures force him to loosen up, at which point we learn there's a little more too him than is let on. This makes for a great teaser for the next volume, but doesn't mean Vol 1 can't stand up on its own.
4.0 von 5 Sternen it's hard to fine a better way of spending few bucks 17. September 2014

It would be strange to review a story about a reviewer so I'll stick to simple recommendation: it's hard to fine a better way of spending few bucks. The bang-to-buck ratio is simply awesome.
