He and his half-brother Niko have managed to stay a step ahead for three years, but now Cal’s dad has found them again. And Cal is about to learn why they want him, why they’ve always wanted him…for he is the key to unleashing their hell on earth. The fate of the human world will be decided in the fight of Cal’s life…
Über den Autor
Rob, short for Robyn (yes, he is really a she) Thurman lives in Indiana, land of rolling hills and cows, deer, and wild turkeys. Many, many turkeys. She is also the author of the Cal Leandros Series: Nightlife, Moonshine, Madhouse, and Deathwish; has a story in the anthology Wolfsbane and Mistletoe; and is the author of Trick of the Light, the first book in the Trickster series.
Besides wild, ravenous turkeys, she has a dog (if you don’t have a dog, how do you live?)—one hundred pounds of Siberian husky. He looks like a wolf, has paws the size of a person’s hand, ice blue eyes, teeth out of a Godzilla movies, and the ferocious habit of hiding under the kitchen table and peeing on himself when strangers come by. Fortunately, she has another dog that is a little more invested in keeping the food source alive. By the way, the dogs were adopted from shelters. They were fully grown, already housetrained, and grateful as hell. Think about it next time you’re looking for a Rover or Fluffy.

The first book in Rob (Robyn) Thurmans Cal Leandros series really is something else. It takes everything in the genre you know and than turns it around. With its great plot, loveable characters and Cal's black humor that emergeces ever so often this is definitely a book to buy.
The protagonist is Caliban "Cal" Leandros, the result of a breeding program of his elf-"Auphe"-father (no, they are not beautiful, they are not nice and they will torture you for the fun of it before having you for breakfast - as the main course) and a gipsy mother who couldn't care less for her sons. Luckily for Cal he has his big brother Niko, 100% human and nevertheless a force to be reckoned with in a New York inhabitated by the occasional monsters. After a life on the run from the Auphe, who want Cal for their own nefarious purposes, the brothers are finally forced to a showdown in New York.
This book is dark, gruesome, gritty Urban Fantasy, comparable to Harry Dresden. It's not a rip-off, though, style, story and characterisation are very different. What makes this book so amazing is the dynamics between the two brothers, one believing himself to be a monster (well, at least half of one) and one refusing to give up on his little brother. Every person in this book is very well drawn, moody Cal, Zen-like Niko and frivolous Robin Goodfellow - no one is one-dimensional, everyone shows a suprising depth of character. Just as much as the action it is the protagonists in this book that keep you up all night reading.
Last but not least: Thank you ever so much for an Urban Fantasy book cover without a half-naked man bending over a damsel in distress. The brilliant cover art of this book and of the following releases in the series (Moonshine - Madhouse - Deathwish) really capture the mood of the book. Dark, no-nonsense and with more than just a hint of danger.

Diese Fantasyreihe ist wirklich sehr schön.
Anfangs, also die ersten 80 Seiten war ich noch nicht 100% überezeugt, aber die Geschichte wurde immer besser.
Positives:
- Die Charaktere sind alle sehr verschieden und die zwei Hauptpersonen (zwei Brüder)sind intelligent, tapfer und ganz wichtig: einfach "menschlich".
Sie sind keineswegs nur einfache Helden, die zu jeder Zeit alles im Griff haben, sondern vielmehr zwei Menschen, die auch mit Ängsten kämpfen, die sehr nachvollziehbar sind.
- Außerdem ist die tiefe Bindung zwischen den beiden Brüdern sehr schön und bewegend. Ich finde, dass es nichts Wichtigeres gibt, als für seine Famile da zu sein.
- Das Buch ist nicht monoton, sondern vielmehr durchweg interessant und unvorhersehbar.
- Auch gelungen finde ich die Darstellung der Gefühel und Gedanken der einzelnen Figuren.
- Dieses Buch erinnert etwas an die Serie "Supernatural"
Negatives:
- Den Anfang des Buches hätte man etwas spannender gestallten können.
(- Wer auf Romatik oder eine Liebesgeschichte hofft, der sollte lieber ein anderes Buch lesen. )-> Eigentlich keine Kritik, sondern vielmehr ein Hinweis.

Der Klappentext von "Nightlife" deutet schon an, um was es geht. "Urban Fantasy". Es ist der erste Band von Rob Thurmans Reihe um die Leandros Geschwister und ihre Erlebnisse.
Cal und Niko, seine älterer Bruder, leben im Big Apple. Sie sind untergetaucht, auf der Flucht vor etwas Bösen, dass Cal unbedingt in seine Finger bekommen möchte. Gerade als Cal denkt es wäre wieder einigermaßen möglich ein normales Leben zu führen, überschlagen sich die Ereignisse.
Thurman legt ein rasantes, spannendes und Action geladenes Debüt vor. Man legt dieses Buch nicht mehr so einfach aus den Händen'Es hat alles, was ein Leserherz erfreut!!!
Natürlich könnte man ein paar Parallelen zur TV-Serie "Supernatural" ziehen, aber ich denke "Nightlife" hat genügend "eigenen" Stil, dass man darüber sicherlich hinwegsehen kann.
