In July 2001, Federal Anti-Terrorist Task Force detective John Corey, a brilliant, smart-ass detective last seen in Plum Island and The Lion's Game, accompanies his FBI agent wife, Kate Mayfield, to the fifth anniversary of the disaster. John, whose wife worked the crash in 1996, understands that Kate has brought him along because she doesn't buy the official finding of "mechanical failure" and wants him to mount his own investigation. There are 200 eyewitnesses who swear they saw a missile lift into the clear night sky and bring down the airplane, a charge dismissed by the CIA as an optical illusion. Though Corey is warned away from the investigation, like any good fictional detective, this only serves to spur him on. He uncovers evidence that a man and a woman, on the beach that fateful night videotaping their adulterous affair, inadvertently caught on tape the missile hitting the plane. The book is primarily about John tracking down the couple, but as the end nears, readers will begin to understand the perilous direction in which Demille is leading them. The pages will turn in a blur as a feeling of dread grows, until the end comes and one's worst fears are confirmed. Readers will think about this one for a long time.

I was lucky enough to read an advance copy of demille's latest book. i've waited for the relaease of this book since "up country", which i loved! in the advance copy mr. demille asserts his belief that his latest book is his best one yet. i'm afraid i have to disagree. yes, john corey is back, wise-cracking and all, but i didn't like the story. i did not get me hooked in any way. this is book is not a memorable one. after chapter 3 i started wondering where the story would lead and what the purpose of it is.i'm glad i didn't spend money on the hardcover, and i am still looking forward to another demille book. but please: i'd like to read books that are at least as funny and exciting as "up country" and "the lion's game". Following "Plum Island" and "Lions Game" this book continues the 'life' of John Corey. He's still at the ATTF and still good for a shipload of nice one-liners. The story is a little strange this time, but brings up a lot of good questions about the world in these years. But this is an adventure book and it stays interesting all the time, so I finished it in one streak. As always the persons are quite realistic and complicated. The story itself is not realistic, but close enough to follow the "what if" kind of fantasy. Some minor technical inconsitensies, no problem. The writing is a little to political correct sometimes, but still readable :) ... The ending is quite a hit, predictable if you catch a hint or two at the beginning and of course the author is unable to answer all questions he put in the air, but that's also clear from the beginning since he is using a real event for this book and that event seems still to hold unanswered questions. Good reading. "Plum Island" and "Lions Game" were better, but not that much.

The Wise Cracking yet complex Dective John Cory is back that alone makes this book worth reading! The hero of Lions Game and Plum Island is now working for the Federal Anti-Terrorist Task Force and investigating the 1996 crash of TWA flight 800. the Crux of the plot is a couple Video tapping themselfs on the beach that night catch tape of a missle hitting the plane. I must admit this book's plot is not as tight as I expect from Demille, but it is worth the price just to get back into John Cory's head. Oh! also Check out "A Tourist in the Yucatan" Cool thriller!
