Robyn Penrose is a lecturer in 19th-century literature at a university located in the fictitious English Midlands city of Rummidge. Vic Wilcox is managing director of Pringle's, an industrial casting company located in a grimy suburb. They are thrown together as part of a "shadow scheme" concocted by their superiors in response to a governmentally ordained "Industry Year." Entering into the arrangement with considerable skepticism and lack of appreciation for the other's mode of life, they get off to a rocky start, but then slowly develop a mutual respect and even liking for each other (and in Vic's case something more). Nice Work is, indeed, a "nice" novel. Lodge spoofs in a nonjudgmental way both the pretensions of academia and the materialism of the upper-middle business class. While lacking in stylistic elegance, this is a well-told tale full of gentle humor that should, despite its setting, have broad appeal to Americans.

This book is a masterly exploration of how insular people become living their lives in one culture (in this case, industry or academia) . When Robyn, highly successful in academia, meets Vic, highly successful in industry, the suspicion, culture shock and new insights on both sides are glorious to watch. I was also impressed by his skill at characterisation - Vic and his family are very well-drawn, and Robyn is marvellous... I know Lodge is an English Lit. lecturer himself, but to portray an idealistic, brilliant, female lecturer so convincingly takes talent. Funny and perceptive. Nice work, David.

NICE WORK is a fine piece of literature, using different techniques (eg. the battle of the sexes, the battle of the corporate vs the educated, the battle of two eogs), and turns them into a wonderfully woven piece where heartaches and breakups are simply side stories to the main clash between Vic and Robyn. A part of the lodge trilogy in that it has characters thrown in from CHANGING PLACES and SMALL WORLD (Phillip Swallow and Morris Zapp show up), and the connections are very evident. It differs from the other two however, in that it focuses more on the business world against the academic world, as opposed to being based solely in acadmia, as the other two in the trilogy were. A great read!!!!!

I love Lodge's fiction and this is probably my favorite of all of them. The story, about a university-sponsored exchange program which allows a leftist academic to shadow an industrial plant manager in the English steelbelt, allows Lodge to contrast the business and academic worlds. The book is both entertaining and insightful, and the plant manager in particular comes off as a complicated and interesting person. In the last couple of years, I have made a transition from academia to business so this book was very personally meaningful to me. I highly recommend it to anyone. If you're interested in picking up one of Lodge's novels to get an idea of what they are like, this is probably the best place to start. Earlier novels, such as "Small World," are a bit insular in their concentration on professors but this one is broader and, I think, better constructed. Anyway, highly recommended.
