Kurzbeschreibung

In the New York City subway system, advertisements emblazon everything from station walls to the roofs of train cars. The surreptitious scrawls of clever--and not-so-clever--culture jammers that deface the polished images of starlets and media darlings are nearly as ubiquitous as these advertisements. In New York Dick, Galen Smith displays the result of his years spent spelunking in the subway system. What he has observed and documented is one very specific trope, the addition of a penis to posters advertising everything from the latest Hollywood blockbuster to a public service announcement. This sleek book details the original ads and how they have been embellished. Crassly humorous, New York Dick provides a glimpse of the work of those who re-appropriate corporate communications in a very specific manner.

Vandalism is a Crime - and an Art Form ... 18. Mai 2011
Von Grady Harp - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
Galen Smith subtitles his book of photographs NEW YORK DICK with the a seemingly straight forward comment: LEWD DRAWINGS AND OBNOXIOUS COMMENTS ON NEW YORK CITY ADVERTISING POSTERS. But what Smith has really done for us is provide a cascade of repeated phallic images as they have been affixed to walls and posters and sometimes simply open spaces in the city. His introduction is edifying in explaining the meaning behind the 'vandalism' and the comparison to the immediate Internet communication means of making anonymous statements is fun to read. And food for thought!

What follows in this well designed and reproduced book are simply photographs of 'defaced' posters with what appears to be the rapid felt tip pen application of hastily drawn male phalluses in the most imaginative places. An added feature to each display of vandalism is an insert showing the original poster or building side with arrows showing the insertion of the spontaneously applied art. Most of the time it is amusing and very often it appears to be making some fearless objections to mass media in general. Some people may find the applied symbols of male temperament offensive and those people don't need to share this book. For the sociologist or for the street art lover there is much to observe and drink in from this off the wall but very entertaining book. Grady Harp, May 11

Great Book 5. Dezember 2010
Von RMyers - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
Great idea for a book! I love the simple, straightforward, no holds-barred message that shines from from New York Dick. "I know what you mean" has never rung so true as in this fascinating compilation of phallic f-you's that cut to the chase and don't beat around the bush, so to speak. NYD will make you wince, giggle and snort with laughter as you thumb through his thoughtful and well executed collection. The running commentary is as engaging as the careful design and the whole package is as funny and captivating as the dangle doodles themselves. A great gift idea for the holidays and the perfect conversation-starting centerpiece for any home that enjoys a good laugh. Well done!

Lewd drawings, obnoxious comments, true, and funny 7. November 2010
Von Turner H. - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
The title tells you exactly what's in the book. You'll find lots of smug ads, vaguely familiar or pointlessly famous personalities, all with lots of penises drawn on them, plus some crude comments, some mustaches, some other naughty bits too.

But why does such crass stuff hold your attention? I think the mesmerizing element is that you understand why someone wants to take the juice out of big media by applying some nasty juice (at least in drawn form) of your own. Also it's a slap-stick level snort-laugh, the same sort of dumb thing over and over, but even the repetition has a strange humor (and insight) to it.
