"This book is unique in covering IP and PSTN routing in one place". - Jennifer Rexford, Professor of Computer Science, Princeton University "Medhi and Ramasamy offer unique and comprehensive coverage of the fundamentals and practical aspects of routing from design to operations and algorithms to implementation. This book is a 'must have' reference for network engineers as well as students and researchers who want to have a solid understanding of routing evolution and the latest developments for next-generation routing." - Prosper Chemouil, Director of Research Programs, France Telecom R Fellow, IEEE "This book presents an introspective as well as practical perspective on Internet routing, including BGP, and how routers are built for routing. Along with its treatment of PSTN and transport routing, it covers the whole gamut in routing comprehensively." - Ravi Chandra, Chief Operating Officer, Sonoa Systems (co-author of six RFCs on BGP)

Network routing can be broadly categorized into Internet routing, PSTN routing, and telecommunication transport network routing. This book systematically considers these routing paradigms, as well as their interoperability. The authors discuss how algorithms, protocols, analysis, and operational deployment impact these approaches. A unique feature of the book is consideration of both macro-state and micro-state in routing; that is, how routing is accomplished at the level of networks and how routers or switches are designed to enable efficient routing.

In reading this book, one will learn about 1) the evolution of network routing, 2) the role of IP and E.164 addressing in routing, 3) the impact on router and switching architectures and their design, 4) deployment of network routing protocols, 5) the role of traffic engineering in routing, and 6) lessons learned from implementation and operational experience. This book explores the strengths and weaknesses that should be considered during deployment of future routing schemes as well as actual implementation of these schemes. It allows the reader to understand how different routing strategies work and are employed and the connection between them. This is accomplished in part by the authors' use of numerous real-world examples to bring the material alive.

. Bridges the gap between theory and practice in network routing, including the fine points of implementation and operational experience
. Routing in a multitude of technologies discussed in practical detail, including, IP/MPLS, PSTN, and optical networking
. Routing protocols such as OSPF, IS-IS, BGP presented in detail
. A detailed coverage of various router and switch architectures
. A comprehensive discussion about algorithms on IP-lookup and packet classification
. Accessible to a wide audience due to its vendor-neutral approach
. CD-ROM with bonus chapters on advanced topics

5.0 von 5 Sternen A thorough grounding in the theory of networks and routing 18. April 2007
Von Stephen - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
This book covers computer networking theory and practice, with a strong bias toward IP-based networks. It's thorough, complete, and developed based on years of refinement of the material in the classroom and in the field. The authors have a wealth of practical experience, and it really shows through.

In addition to IP networking, this book covers some great material related to voice networking. As technologies like VoIP become more and more prevalent, readers of this book will appreciate knowing some of the history and the design principles that that factor into the technology set.

So, if you have an interest in the theory that goes into the practice, this is a great book. It's written at a graduate level, and it's very light on introductory material (if you manage to learn IP by reading Chapter 1, I'd like to meet you!), but if you're an IP network professional, you should be well prepared to absorb this book.

I use this book in a graduate course. A very unique book that focuses on all aspects of routing. A notable aspect is its coverage of QoS.

1.0 von 5 Sternen Printed version - no CD-ROM 17. Juni 2013
Von Nobody In Particular - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe|Verifizierter Kauf
I ordered the Kindle version of this book and like it a lot -- I would give it 5 stars. However I have a major reservation that I must speak up about.

Reading the Kindle version I saw that it mentions some very interesting and important additional content which is only being made available on the CD-ROM accompanying the printed version of the book.

Since I really wanted that additional content, I ordered the printed version specifically to get the CD-ROM containing the additional content. I personally don't mind having both electronic and hard copy forms of a book.

In this case however my entire reason for wanting the hard copy was to get the CD-ROM and its content.

I was very disappointed when the hard copy version arrived and there was *no* CD-ROM. The product description says there is one, and it even has a blurb printed on the cover of the book saying there is a CD-ROM. However the copy I received had no CD-ROM. It appears that this copy was manufactured that way -- there is no empty CD-ROM sleeve, and there is no evidence that any such thing has been removed from this particular copy.

What it looks like to me is simply that the publisher stopped manufacturing this book with the CD-ROM in it, and didn't bother changing the blurb on the cover advertising it, or providing a new product discription.

I am extremely annoyed and I am returning my hard copy edition of this book. I am however keeping the Kindle version because I do like the content I received.
