3.0 von 5 Sternen Good effort but falls short 24. Oktober 2011
    Von Deborah - Veröffentlicht auf
I don't why international stories don't fare as well in Christian fiction but I adore them. I especially love stories that take place during the Regency era. While I'm not a huge regency buff, I do enjoy the time period, fashions, customs and history of the era. In this book, readers are introduced to characters who are debating with being loyal to their country or helping out those truly in need. A masquerade ball takes on more than one meaning as national alliances are tested. Romances with those those in enemy territory ensue. Spies, secret midnight rendezvous and never knowing who is really who are just some of the elements included in this story.

I would have liked to have known more about Lydia's relationship with her father. It seems that it has never really been on good terms. I wonder if in future books more about his relationship with his daughters is explained.

There were many times when I was horribly confused by the story. There was a big cast of characters to keep up with as well as many having disguises and multiple identities. I didn't know who was who or what side someone was on. It was very hard to keep track of in the story. Eakes also has a technique in her writing that I do not like at all. She will end a chapter on a cliffhanger and then in the next chapter we have moved on to something else. I feel like nothing gets tied up or actions happen off screen which is very frustrating. I have found many readers who are also frustrated with this so I'm hoping that in the future Eakes stops doing this because it is something that can make or break the entire book.

Overall, I have mixed feelings about the story. The setting, historical aspect and details of the story were fabulous. As I stated I do love regency era books and I really loved the international aspect of the story. I do want to read more about British/French relationships and I would like to hear more about the characters. I just did not really enjoy the writing of the book. It was just a bit confusing and not as strong as it could have been. I will have to wait and see if I decide to continue with the series in the future.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A suspenseful tale rich with intrigue and romance!! 20. Oktober 2011
Von Katie Garvin - Veröffentlicht auf
I've read several of the books Laurie Eakes has published over the past few years, and all were very good and beautifully written. When I first heard about this new series that begins with A Necessary Deception, I was eager to find out what new adventure Laurie would think up next! To my delight, this book did not disappoint my expectations in the slightest--in fact, I thought it was the best one she's written yet!

Lady Lydia Gale made a wonderful heroine. I love the mystery in everything: from Lydia's previous marriage to Christien current lifestyle! Both of Lydia's sisters (Cassandra and Honore) added a great mix into this cast of delightful characters--and ensured that Lydia was forever trying to undo some damage either Cassandra or Honore had done!

The Regency era isn't my usual reading genre, but I do enjoy diving into that oh-so intriguing time period. I am convinced I could never live in that day and age--what with all the high society do's and don't's, I would scandalize myself on the first day without even knowing it! But it is really interesting to read. Secrets and scandal seem to abound, and gossipers were in there element among those of high society. Taken into consideration that Laurie wrote a part intrigue, part mystery novel with A Necessary Deception, she couldn't have picked a more perfect time period!

I admit I was surprised when this book turned out to be just as much a suspense/mystery novel as a Regency romance. What a wonderful combination! From almost the first chapter, Laurie draws her readers in with the puzzling question of who the person is who is blackmailing Lydia. And from that point on, the suspense and romance (oh yeah!) continue to build.

The dangers that Lydia and Christien continually face as they try to find the blackmailer and the traitor in their midst make for several heart-pounding moments. Since everything in their society is oh-so proper, that first kiss between them is long awaited. But when it does come, boy was that a scene!! A Necessary Deception has a wonderful mixture woven into a strong plot--suspense, intrigue, romance, action, mystery...everything this bookworm loves!

I reviewed this book for Revell. It was not required that I give a positive review, but solely to express my own thoughts and opinions of this book, which I have done.

    3.0 von 5 Sternen A Necessary Deception 19. Oktober 2011
    Von Holly - Veröffentlicht auf
Lydia's husband went to war with France after a week of marriage. After his death, she received cryptic instructions which told her that one day she would have the chance to help a friend of her husband's. When that time comes, she's surprised to find out that she's helping to free a French prisoner. With unanswered questions she, nevertheless, fulfills her obligation. As she then travels to London to prepare her younger sisters for one's entrance into society and another's marriage, she's surprised to once again meet this mysterious Frenchman. Lydia has no idea that her actions have drawn her into a dangerous game of intrigue and secrets.

I grew frustrated at times with chapters that ended and then didn't pick up again, but went onto something different. I'm sure it was the author's attempt at suspense, but I often felt like I'd missed something. Lydia's family was difficult to like and it was easy to see her frustrations with them. Her parents left her sisters' lives and futures in her hands and we never really understood why. The story has its moments, but I felt like there were too many unanswered questions and not enough detail.

I read Eakes' Lady in the Mist and while I didn't love it, I was curious about this new one as I enjoy the regency time period. However, both books were rather ordinary and unexceptional and I've decided that this is just an author who doesn't resonate with me. Fans of the regency time period and Laurie Alice Eakes, however, should enjoy this.

5.0 von 5 Sternen One of My Favorite Books! 18. Oktober 2011

Set in 1812, 'Necessary Deception' brought me to a time when England and France were at war, spies were everywhere (or so it seemed), and the London Season was just beginning.

I loved 'Necessary Deception'! It was written so beautifully and the story was so believable that it became addicting to read (I especially didn't want to put it down towards the end).

The plot had so much mystery! I kept trying to figure out who the mastermind was, who was blackmailing Lydia, and whether or not there was a spy (or spies) in her midst.

Historical romance is not my favorite genre to read (suspense is); however, since there was a lot of mystery - 'Necessary Deception' almost felt like a suspense novel!

'Necessary Deception' is the first book that I've read by Laurie Alice Eakes, but I don't think it will be my last - I can hardly wait for the next addition in 'The Daughters of Bainbridge House' series!

I most definitely recommend 'Necessary Deception' if you enjoy reading novels that have romance as well as mystery!

*I received a complimentary copy from the publisher for my review. I was not required to give a positive review, only my honest opinion - which I have done.*

    3.0 von 5 Sternen A very light historical novel! 19. Oktober 2011
Von Noelle the Dreamer - Veröffentlicht auf
With 'A Necessary Deception, Laurie Alice Eakes introduces readers to her new series 'The Daughters of Bainbridge House'.
Set in the Regency era of London society it reminds us of a time when political tension betwixt England and France was strong. This was after all a time when Napoleon Bonaparte's Armies swept the European continent yet the Royal Navy ruled the seas, much to his chagrin.
Suspicion and distrust plagued many of the French emigres and spies were thought to be everywhere.

In 'A Necesary Deception' Laurie Alice Eakes brings us a glimpse of an elegant world complete with intrigues, drawing room etiquette, balls, mysteries, foreign spies and unsuitable suitors but somehow it fell short of my expectations. Her 'Midwives' series was after all well received and faithful readers spoke of fascinating historical background and intriguing characters.

Neither the young widow Lydia Gale or the Frenchman Christien de Meuse (living in England for 10 years seems to have a deplorable effect on his french articulation!) appeared as credible characters in this particular story however and the many extras added little to its development.
The plot in itself was enticing but as such provides little entertainment and confuses readers in its ultimate climax.

Regrettably I cannot say this is anything but a light historical novel to be enjoyed on a cold winter night, tucked by the fire perhaps with a nice box of chocolates to make it a bit sweeter!
I suggest you decide for yourself! After reading her first blog (here) and her latest one (here) there seems to be much more to this author than this one novel!
    I gave it 3 stars.

I received this book free from BAKER REVELL* as part of their Blogger Review program. I was not asked to write a positive review and the opinions expressed are entirely my own.
