Synopsis

This is not a horse-training manual but a people-training one. Master horseman and teacher Pat Parelli offers a philosophy he calls "Natural Horse-Man-Ship", a form of horse-human communication in which the human learns to speak "horse" to the horse. The text is a blend of concepts and exercises. The exercises, or manoeuvres, are designed to help readers more fully comprehend the concepts and to help them communicate effectively with their horses. The volume is divided into three sections: "Natural Horse-Man-Ship - An Overview"; "Natural Horse-Man-Ship - On the Ground"; and "Natural Horse-Man-Ship - In the Saddle". Each section uses the six keys Pat has identified as vital in the development of a Natural Horse-Man - Attitude, Knowledge, Tools, Techniques, Time and Imagination. Like the petals of a flower, each key unfolds in the three sections until the heart of Natural Horse-Man-Ship is presented in its entirety.

Pat Parelli's work is an excellent reference guide for equine enthusiasts at any stage of riding. While his writing style bears the signs of a real show-man, beyond the self-hype lie important ideas and techniques which have, repeatedly, proven exceedingly beneficial for all types of horse-people. He carefully (albeit often somewhat pompously) describes his programme, which consists first of ground-work and then of exercises to be performed in saddle. His very noble goal is to help humans to develop a subtle, understanding relationship with their equine partners.
Having read (and re-read) Parelli's work countless times in the past few months and having consistently applied his programme when "playing" (Parelli believes that humans should never "work" a horse) with my young Quarter Horse, I have witnessed enormous improvements in my horse's demeanour and, crucially, in the trust he has for me. By establishing dominance over my horse using the sensible, humane tactics Parelli recommends, I have made major progress en route to transforming this horse from a fearful, unridden colt into a willing, dependable, "true blue" mount.
I highly endorse Parelli's work; if his programme is applied with persistence, patience, and an open mind, the possibilities in the horse-human relationship are limitless.

I really liked this book alot. I think that Pat Parelli is a wonderful teacher and this is a great way to work with a horse not against it like so many other trainers do. If i had to say a negative, i would say that he promotes that you buy all sorts of tack, etc. I do like the halter (which can be handmade btw) and the lead with popper though. I will definitely buy any other book or video by him.

This book should be a required read for anyone who is interested in caring for horses to the best of their ability and look after their mind, as well as their body, whether they be horse owners, horse workers, equestrians, or just an occasional rider. A book full of 'true knowledge' which teaches what is required to gain 'the knack' or 'gift' with horses.
Parelli, who is very experienced and knowledgable in the theory and practice of horse training, psychology and behaviour, gives us an understanding of how horses think and learn, so that we can learn to be more sympathetic, learning to do things with the horse, not to the horse, so that the horse can become a willing, safe, happy partner and enjoy your company too.
Parelli stresses that since 99% of problems with horses are 'problem people' not 'problem horses' his book is really a people-training book. He has developed a step by step program that is easily followed, that enables anyone with a fair attitude and fee! ling towards the horse to acheive outstanding results with any horse.

This is a wonderful book outlining Parellis Natural Horsemanship techniques. People like Pat are making the old new again. Learning how to be a better horseman and having a willing equine partner takes alot of time. This is not a quick fix but will lead you on a path where you will learn to soar like the eagles.
To comment on the Aussie with the attitude. We all have our ghosts, and have all made mistakes. But, hopefully we learn from them and become better people. Pat has done that. And the relationship that he has with his son, is incrediable. To take a boy who is physically and mentally challenged and incorporate him in his clinics. To see his son beam as he rides his horse at liberty and with a big smile on his face, is a credit to not only Pats son but to the man that has taught his son to be a natural horseman and more importantly an outstanding member of society against all odds. To the man and the horses that he loves and to the family that he loves I say thank you for reminding us that we can achieve our dreams.

Parelli has important concepts to share but I found the book very repetitive and lacking in some details. He has 3 chapters discussing his training tools but fails to describe how to make and adjust the hand tied halter he thinks is a "must have" piece of equipment for his style of training. I found my self hunting for the chapters where he gave actual training advice instead of advertizing hype for his methods, books, videos and clinics. He has a horrid fixation on making everything into numbered list and cutsy alliteration. If I read the phrase"the six yeilds(forward, backward, right, left, up and down)" one more time I will gag. Overall I do think it is worth the Amazon price.

I have read this book and taken a Parelli course. I have been riding all my life and I consider the Parelli instruction absolutely the best on earth. Every horse and every rider will benefit from this book.

I have tried Parelli's methods on my own horses and they work; however, not everyone is physically capable of doing some of the things he mentions, such as mounting or riding bareback. Many horses are not safe to ride bridleless, and it would be foolhardy to try this with them. I feel, though, that any horse will benefit from learning the games, and a horse that can pass the first level test is an all around safer animal. Plus, most of this stuff is just plain fun!
