Leading natural garden designer and expert Noel Kingsbury turns his eye to smaller gardens, hoping to educate owners of city gardens to the added benefits of gardening in tune with nature. These benefits are enormous: increased wildlife leading to a decrease in garden pests, easier to grow plants as they have been chosen specifically for the conditions, a more relaxed feel with plants that flow naturally together, making the vision easier on the eye. Kingsbury backs up his arguments with solid fact and years of experience, clearly explaining the pros and cons of this form of garden cultivation. Gloriously illustrated with colour photographs, this is an informative and inspirational book for all aspiring to a greener life in all senses of the word. - Lucy Watson -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine vergriffene oder nicht verfügbare Ausgabe dieses Titels.

Many gardeners presume that it is not possible to create a habitat for wildlife, and evoke wild places and natural open spaces, unless you have a large garden. In this volume Noel Kingsbury aims to turn that presumption on its head, showing how even in a small space you can create a sustainable ecosystem that looks great - and, once established, largely looks after itself. -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine vergriffene oder nicht verfügbare Ausgabe dieses Titels.

Perfect for the small garden 14. Mai 2005
Von D. Adams - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe
I have a townhouse and very little room to garden, but I've long desired to plan a garden that would blend in with the woods that back up to our house. This book has given me my inspiration and has cemented my decision to plan a garden that will be both natural, peaceful and beautiful. It may take a while, but I'll do it thanks to this book. Have no garden space at all? They even cover that in the "Natural Gardening without a Garden".

My All-Time Favorite Garden Design Book 8. Januar 2008
Von Hope I. Help - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe
Of the too many gardening books I've purchased, this one has transformed me. It opened my eyes to plant groupings that are natural (often native) and pleasing the year round. The illustrations are very beautiful and really do convey what Kingsbury describes. There is also plenty of useful data to help identify the plants that suit each environment. I bought this years ago and continue to return to it for both inspiration and information.

Emphasis on natural 14. Februar 2007
Von 52 weeks, 52 books - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch
Kingsbury writes of creating habitat for insects and hedgehogs as well as people, of selecting plants for your soil and water conditions. (He even writes on what grows best in gravel and in bogs.) This book encourages gardeners to be curious and to experiment. It is for those artists who create with plants.

Good Light Reading and Pretty Pictures 25. März 2013
Von fatal_degree - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe Verifizierter Kauf
This is a well thought out and arranged book, with very nice pictures. It deals with creating "natural" landscapes on a smallish scale. All points in the book are dealt with briefly and in easy to understand terms. The author spends a little time explaining native vs. non-native and ultimately leaves the decision up to you to plant what you want. He does describe pros and cons for both. He goes on to address organic principles and chemical application. Again he leaves the decision to the gardener, but does stress thoughtful and proper use of chemicals if you choose that route.

Each type of habitat is described in regard to soil, moisture, temperature and depicted in photos. Usually different seasons and styles within the type are represented. Plants that are appropriate are given. Mostly common and well known varieties. Habitats include:
- woodland & shade
- woodland edge
- grassland: meadow and prairie, with the differences and care involved for each
- wetlands
- dry, exposed, Mediterranean
- borders
- container gardens [briefly]
- wall gardens [briefly]
- roof gardens [briefly]

Providing for beneficial insect species and wildlife including frogs and birds is included for the different habitats. Thinking through design:
- texture
- color
- space
- balancing formal lines with natural spaces for continuity
- height and vertical dimension

This is not in depth and it is not preachy. It does not have any layouts or step by step how-to guides. It is general theory. It is a starting point to provoke thought and expand on. Good light reading and pretty pictures.
