In Natural Capitalism, three top strategists show how leading-edge companies are practicing "a new type of industrialism" that is more efficient and profitable while saving the environment and creating jobs. Paul Hawken and Amory and Hunter Lovins write that in the next century, cars will get 200 miles per gallon without compromising safety and power, manufacturers will relentlessly recycle their products, and the world's standard of living will jump without further damaging natural resources. "Is this the vision of a utopia? In fact, the changes described here could come about in the decades to come as the result of economic and technological trends already in place," the authors write.
They call their approach natural capitalism because it's based on the principle that business can be good for the environment. For instance, Interface of Atlanta doubled revenues and employment and tripled profits by creating an environmentally friendly system of recycling floor coverings for businesses. The authors also describe how the next generation of cars is closer than we might think. Manufacturers are already perfecting vehicles that are ultralight, aerodynamic, and fueled by hybrid gas-electric systems. If natural capitalism continues to blossom, so much money and resources will be saved that societies will be able to focus on issues such as housing, contend Hawken, author of a book and PBS series called Growing a Business, and the Lovinses, who cofounded and directed the Rocky Mountain Institute, an environmental think tank. Wow, what a book. I just finished it this week and I can tell you this: if you read it and you do not start to think about the world as you know it and its instability regarding political constructs and economical systems, you should probably see a doctor.
About 'The Ecology of Commerce' I wrote that it is a green business manifesto. However, 'Natural Capitalism' is even more and bigger when it comes to its statements about the future of the industrial world. With a more determined line of argument Hawken, Lovins, and Lovins do not only forecast the next industrial revolution but simultaneously initiate it by publishing this book. I am confident that this book is the stimulus of a new discussion which needs to be led, not only by business professionals, but everyone who is actually interested in the future of this planet and where we are going with it.

Das Buch wurde mir von einem Professor, im Rahmen einer Diskussion über nachhaltiges Wirtschaften, empfohlen.
Es gibt einen breiten Überblick über gesamtwirtschaftliche Möglichkeiten, das ökologische und ökonomische Interessen der Gesellschaft und der Industrie zu verbinden. Es beschreibt allerdings wenig die realen Umsetzungsmöglichkeiten.
Leider ist die Version relativ alt, aber interessanterweise trotzdem noch auf die heutige Situation anwendbar.
Es gibt einen breiten Überblick über gesamtwirtschaftliche Möglichkeiten, das ökologische und ökonomische Interessen der Gesellschaft und der Industrie zu verbinden. Es beschreibt allerdings wenig die realen Umsetzungsmöglichkeiten.
Leider ist die Version relativ alt, aber interessanterweise trotzdem noch auf die heutige Situation anwendbar.

This book cuts through the usual gloss and fluff of other "earth friendly eco-supporting books" by providing solid compelling data ( backed up with extensive detailed references)on our current (mis)use of natural resources and the eventual conclusion that soon we will see that capitalism and proper use of our natural resources can be combined and achieve financial success. This book will be seen as the precursor for refreshing change and a new understanding of what we need to do in the future. Buy it ! Read it ! Live it !
