Simple and Good Balance 10. März 2014

Vine Kundenrezension eines kostenfreien Produkts ( Was ist das? )
I have lived in Hawaii all my life, so I thought it would be interesting to review a travel guide. I like travel guides that give you plenty of inside scoops. This one doesn't do that, but I can't knock it for that reason. To be fair, I have to review it for its target audience - people who have never been here and don't know the first thing about Hawaii. For those folks, this is a good start. If you like Hawaii, and want to see all the things that the newbies don't even know about, get "hidden Hawaii" type of books for your subsequent visits.

Like other National Geographic travel guides, this one starts with a good grounding in relevant history and culture. I smiled when I read the cultural section where it talked about Hawaii being different from other places and that newcomers should try to fit in with the local ways rather than being heavy handed with their ways from back home. That bit of "do as the natives do" is good advice not just for here, but for anywhere. For one thing, people here are less in a hurry than folks from most other places. My good childhood friend was a slug in traffic, even for someone from Hawaii. Then he went away and still lives in Los Angeles. When he comes home to visit, he's an impatient lead-foot. Yes, the pace is slower here.

The book covers all the major islands and gives you a brief peek at many of the things a new visitor might like to see, and perhaps should see before going off the beaten path.

This is a good guide book for those new to Hawaii. You can expect that the activities and places in the book are fun and safe. I mention safe because there are many fun things to do and places to see in Hawaii that are thrilling, but not safe. This is not the book for those types of places.

Gorgeous Travel Guide 4. März 2014

National Geographic always does a spectacular job putting together travel guides. Even their travel brochures have itineraries that make you want to see every remote corner of the world where they will take you.
But the book isn't organized as well as Frommer's guides are. For example, I tried to find a restaurant I loved the last time I was in Maui, the Haile Maile General Store. It's there, but you have to know where to look, specifically, what section of Maui it's in. It wasn't in the index, and I think all restaurants should be listed there so you can look one up if you happen to know it's name.
That said, you'll get a feel for the splendors of the islands and it will make you want to return or to travel their for the first time. I can't wait to go back!

Colorful and very informative 9. März 2014

This guidebook has the sort of color photographs that one expects from National Geographic. It also contains very informative maps and many descriptions of sites that one should not miss, as well as may “insider” tips regarding when it is best to visit, special events, local travel, what to pack, safety tips, etc. The book also contains lists of restaurants and hotels, but not as many as one would find in some other guidebooks (the Hotel and Restaurant section, which covers all of the islands, is only 17 pages long). However, such listings are not as critical as they once were as this information can be found on the Internet.

The book covers: Oahu, Maui, Hawaii (the Big Island), Kauai, Molokai, Lanai and other smaller islands. Its 5.25x8.5 inch size makes it easy to carry around. I recommend the book as a very good guidebook of sites to see and a book that gives general information regarding history and customs, as opposed to very extensive hotel and restaurant listing, but these are readily available on your cell phone or tablet-type device.

More Than Just a Travel Guide 17. März 2014

I can remember as a child loving to read or even browse through The National Geographic Magazines. There were two outstanding things about the magazine. One was the in-depth and thorough coverage of the places and the other was the beautiful photography that captured the heart and soul of the land and the people.

I have always admired and respected National Geographic for their ability to present any geographic area with brilliant color photography and to really convey a local's perspective of the area. I think they have certainly done this with their travel guide on Hawaii.

The travel guide covers everything you would expect from a first class travel guide. But in my opinion, it goes a step further. I believe this book will give you some great insights into unique places to visit, insider tips on what to do - and what not to do, a list of not-to be-missed attractions. This would be the closest thing to having a local give you a guided tour.

There is a wealth of information in this book. You will certainly not get all of it with a quick read. It is well organized, first giving a general history of Hawaii and then each of the major islands are presented in separate sections.

For each island you will find a brief history, the major attractions to see, some little known attractions and insider tips. There are plenty of text boxes that give special hints that will make your trip remarkable. Of course there are beautiful full color photos to make the experience more enjoyable.

At the very back of the book, arranged by islands are a list of major hotels and a wide range of restaurants.

If you are planning a trip to one or more of the islands, this will certainly be a valuable resource for making sure you get the most out of your trip.

It is a nice size, a little over 5" X 8.5" and totals 267 pages. The pages are high quality, glossy paper. The upper corner of the pages are color coded so you can quickly find the section you are looking for. The highlights and text boxes are also color coded so you can know at a glance what they are about.

There is a fold out map on the back of the front cover that shows all the islands and there are plenty of maps scattered throughout the book.

This is a very comprehensive travel guide that make your trip more productive. It will also serve as a treasure of memories once you return.
