In 1845, just seven years after his escape from slavery, the young Frederick Douglass published this powerful account of his life in bondage and his triumph over oppression. The book, which marked the beginning of Douglass's career as an impassioned writer, journalist, and orator for the abolitionist cause, reveals the terrors he faced as a slave, the brutalities of his owners and overseers, and his harrowing escape to the North. It has become a classic of American autobiography. This edition of the book, based on the authoritative text that appears in Yale University Press's multivolume edition of the Frederick Douglass Papers, is the only edition of Douglass's Narrative designated, as an Approved Text by the Modern Language Association's Committee on Scholarly Editions. It includes a chronology of Douglass's life, a thorough introduction by the eminent Douglass scholar John Blassingame, historical notes, and reader responses to the first edition of 1845.

I expected this book to be rather historical in nature and probably pretty boring- but I was pleasantly suprised to find it to be a definite page-turner! This book offers valuable insight into what slavery was truly like for Douglass and many others of his time. His account is heart-wrenching. I definitely suggest this book.

Gerade jetzt wo der Film über Abraham Lincoln zu sehen ist, sollte man auch über Frederick Douglass Bescheid wissen. Leider wird er im Film nicht erwähnt wird, obwohl er eine eindrucksvolle Persönlichkeit war und sich für die Befreiung der Sklaven eingesetzt hatte. In dieser Biographie kommt sehr deutlich zum Ausdruck, wie man Menschen unterdrücken kann, indem man ihnen den Weg zu Bildung massiv verwehrt, eine Vorgangsweise, die in vielen Ländern immer noch funktioniert, vor allem was Frauen anbelangt.
Ich bin froh, dass ich durch Zufall auf dieses Buch gestoßen bin und kann es allen nur wärmstens empfehlen.

This is one of the most lucid, absorbing autobiographies I've read; that it has much to say about American history, specifically the institution of slavery, only adds to its luster. It is remarkable that someone born into slavery could learn to write as well as virtually any "man of letters" in his era. Despite Douglass' unhappy lot (or maybe because of it), he managed to acquire a great deal of insight into the people, white and black, around him. Douglass convincingly depicts how the institution of slavery damages both oppressed and oppressor--it dehumanizes the former and brings out the cruelest qualities of the latter. (A hundred years later, Martin Luther King would say much the same about the practice of segregration.) There is much anger in the Narrative--but also a wise and noble spirit. Compulsively readable, this book is still very much "relevant" today, and I can hardly imagine a time in which people will no longer wish to read it.
