Nancy had frozen in place. Just two metres from her was the back of one of the beings responsible for ending the lives of countless colonists. It did not look human. It looked like a crudely formed statue, approximately two and a half metres tall.
She suddenly remembered the small weapon in her sweaty hand. Her heart raced and she swallowed hard as she raised it to fire. Before she could pull the trigger, a hand reached from behind her and clamped over her mouth.
It's me, the thoughts of Xon reassured her before she could make a rather loud and position revealing protest. He wrapped his fingers around her other wrist and lowered her arm.
Not enough power to get through that. This, however, he told her as he lifted his own rifle, might do the trick. Get behind me darling.
Nancy obeyed the order. If Xon did manage to fire into that rocky hide, they would be showered by rock chips and larger debris. She decided to leave the killing to him, the doctoring was her department.
Xon took careful aim. These beasts might be large, but they were slow. How they swiftly killed like ninjas was beyond him. Perhaps their advantage was the smoke and dust. Right now though thoughts like those were relegated to the back of his mind while he waited for that moment between breaths and fired.
"Oh shit," said Xon.
"What?" Nancy asked, also out loud.
"I think I just pissed it off," Xon told her as he spun around. "Run!"
