A Gift From My Wife
Alexandra had never posed nude for anybody before she met me. Early on, I asked her to let me photograph her, and she said O.K., but she demanded to keep the film until we were married. So she had rolls and rolls of film, and as a wedding gift she had them developed, put them in a box, and gave me a box of naked photographs of my wife. Which I thought was a great gift – even better than scores of naked pictures of my ex-girlfriends.

Mai 2004
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe
This book contains many vulgar nude pictures of women and sexually explicit language. It would not deserve to get an R rating if it were a motion picture.

With so many things worthy of parody, why would a photographer bother with creating a low-quality set of images and sexual fantasies? Obviously, the thrill of "fooling" the media into thinking this was on the level must have been high. But viewing and reading this book won't do much for you.

This is a joke book, a joke on those who thought it was a "serious" publishing effort revealing someone's sex life and relationships from the 1970s. It has parody written all over it, in case anyone bothered to look closely. For example, the book says that the author has kept in touch with all of the women and they gave permission for him to portray them. First, that would never happen. Second, several images indicated that the person had died many years ago or could not be found, so obviously no permission was available on those. Third, Casanova in his wildest dreams was never this appealing to women.

The book contains a series of nude and partially clothed photographs of women the author supposedly slept with. Each one is accompanied by a fictitious account of the sexual and personal relationships involved. Most of these contain ridiculous fantasies about relations in public places, inappropriate places, and with inappropriate people. There was not a single paragraph in the book that is worth reading. They are just parody put-downs of the women involved.

The photographs are deliberately done to appear inept, to mimic what a poor quality amateur photographer would have done. The images are small, poorly framed, badly lit, and printed badly.

What can I say in praise of the book?

Here is a perfectly wonderful concept for a book with elements which ought to bring about great pleasure in consumtion and great admiration for the conceiver; but something went terribly wrong in the execution so that one is left with an awful aftertaste. The concept of the book is deceptively simple: the title tells you what it is. The ingredients are fabulous too: the subjects are young women from the '70-s in the buff looking happy or at least engaging; the photography is generally sound but not necessarily accomplished; and the narrative about the "girlfriends" is intended to be carefree and evocative of an age gone by. If this concept had been executed well, reading and looking at it would have been akin to sipping a margarita: sweet and tart, thrilling and intoxicating, and leaving one to wonder how the simple ingredients can bring about such enjoyable a confluence of tastes. Alas, the book was not so well executed; and the mis-execution was in the narrative. There were at least five occasions that the comments about the women came off being toxic and hurtful. One does not have to be a prude to find these comments to be the sensory equivilent of having a margarita with too much salt on the rim of the glass: a gratuitous act which overwhelms everything that would have otherwise left you marveling at what an ingenious drink this is.

This book is bound to elicit the envy of most males who were sexually hyperactive in the 70's and didn't think of unsheathing their cameras while they were at it. The naked pictures of the title are amateurish, and that contributes to their charm. The female human body is intrinsically beautiful yet extremely difficult to photograph without making it appear grotesque, obscene or absurd. Mr. Helfrich manages to reflect that beauty by remaining as naive behind the camera as he appears to have been in front of his subjects.
Only in America! I cannot imagine such a wondrous collection of nude young women appearing so clean and so pasteurized and so devoid of moral microbes in a foreign publication. These are our sisters and our cousins and our next door neighbors. They are wholesome and good and entirely lacking in malice.
The text is childish in tone and scope and that, too, adds to the charm of this book. The captions and comments suggest the reflections of a kid overwhelmed by his past carnal riches who is now trying to be very grown up about it all. It is a fun book that does not pretend to be art, or philosophy or even history. Its blatant title is as completely devoid of pretense as the pictures the book contains. True Americana, likely to acquire value and stature with the passage of time.

In the 1970's there were a lot of things you could catch from your sexual exploits/adventures that might not have you looking back in fondness, unless you are Mark Helfrich. This man caught them on film and put them in a book for the rest of us to relive or just plain enjoy the idea of a free loving generation. That time period has long gone but "Naked Pictures Of My Ex-Girlfriends" takes you back there as Helfrich runs through the women he ran through as well as the ones that ran through him. How many guys do you know that have a file, no matter how long or short, of their sexual conquests? I know a few too many, m'self. But to put it all in a book! I was simply wow'ed at this ballsy publication that the exes in question agreed to let happen. There's even a tastefullness to it that doesn't come off as some testosterone filled "Girls I Porked" type of fodder for the nudie stands. A thoughtful retrospect is given on each conquest which causes you to find your way through these beautiful women right along with the photographer. I'm not usually one for photo books, but this one takes a bold new step in a much more interesting direction. I wish my exes were that cool.
