David Jansen, CCIE No. 5952 (Routing/Switching), is a Cisco Technical Solutions Architect specializing in enterprise data center architecture. He has 20 years of industry experience, 15 of them at Cisco (6 as a solution architect); and has delivered several Cisco Live presentations on NX-OS and data center solutions.


Matthew McPherson, senior systems engineer and solutions architect for the Cisco Central Select Operation, specializes in data center architectures. He has 21 years of experience in the industry and has held certifications from Novell, HP, Microsoft, ISC2, SNIA, and Cisco. His focus is working with customers worldwide to address their challenges with comprehensive end-to-end data center architectures and how they can best use Cisco technology to their advantage. He has had the opportunity to speak at Cisco Live on VDCs, NX-OS Multicast, and general design. He lives in Ohio with his wife and four wonderful children and enjoys travel and auto racing. David has more than 20 years' experience in the information technology industry. He has held multiple certifications from Microsoft, Novell, Checkpoint, and Cisco. David has been with Cisco for 15 years and working as a technical solutions architect for 6 years and has provided unique experiences helping customers build architectures for Enterprise data centers. David holds a B.S.E. degree in computer science from the University of Michigan (Go Blue!) and an M.A. degree in adult education from Central Michigan University. Matthew McPherson is a senior systems engineer and solutions architect for Cisco in the Central Select Operation, specializing in data center architectures. Matt has been with Cisco for more than 2 1/2 years and has more than 12 years of experience in the industry working for service providers and large enterprise customers in the financial and manufacturing verticals. He has held certifications from Juniper, Netscreen, and Cisco, and possesses a deep technical background in the areas of routing, switching, and security. His primary focus is working with strategic customers in greater Michigan to address their overall infrastructure challenges. He lives in Michigan with his wife and enjoys biking and collecting cars.

I have been waiting for this book to come out for a few months and am pleased with the content, readability and layout of the book. Nice examples throughout the book for most topics.
The 1000V chapter is quite big and very very good BUT with what cisco is doing in that space including vWAAS, VXLAN, and VASA (on HyperV and VMware) this really needs to be its own book. Cisco recently released the 6000 series Nexus and this almost paralleled the book it is not in the book.

I received a review copy of this book to supplement my CCIE Data Center exam studies and did end up passing the Written exam (still studying for Lab). Having completed reading the chapters, I must say that the flow of the outline is very complimentary and covers a wide variety of NX-OS features and designs. One of my favorite features of this book is that it contains hundreds of actual outputs from a NX-OS CLI session to reinforce all of the various learning points. It's incredibly difficult and expensive to get your hands on a Nexus 5000 or 7000 series switch outside of Rack Rentals, making this book a great peek into the commands necessary to get the job done. I also really enjoyed the depth that authors explored the Nexus 1000v product, including details on VXLAN, the Virtual Security Gateway, and configuration with VMware vCenter.

If you're looking for some great material on NX-OS for written exam studies or finding ideas of exercises to perform in a lab, this book is a great resource to have on your shelf. Additionally, if you just want the "tome of knowledge" on Nexus as a day-to-day admin / engineer, you will want to have this book within reach.

This book is an excellent resource for engineers just starting with Cisco Nexus products and engineers already working with them. I have worked with Cisco IOS for over twenty years and for those concerned with making the transition from Cisco IOS to NX-OS, this book is for you.

The authors cover the basic routing and switching topics familiar to those experienced with Cisco IOS. This book excels at detailing the concepts and configurations of the advanced features of the Cisco Nexus products. Thankfully, the authors make generous use of screenshots and CLI examples with both configuration and show commands. I strongly recommend this book for engineers with no NX-OS experience as well as those with NX-OS experience. Further, Administrators responsible for the design and implementation of various Hypervisors (VMware, KVM, XEN, and Hyper-V) will find the Nexus 1000v chapter informative.

The book covers foundational concepts include basic management, configuring VLANs and spanning tree, Layer 3 interfaces, First Hop Redundancy Protocols, IP Multicast, Security, and routing protocols. They also detail the more advanced features of the Nexus products such as Virtual Device Contexts (VDC), virtual port channel (vPC), Quality of Service, Fiber Channel over Ethernet (FCoE), Overlay Transport Virtualization (OTV), MPLS, and LISP.

I am in the middle of a Nexus deployment and having this book beside me has helped tremendously. I am already familiar Nexus 5000 and 7000s. Several sections of this book provided me with a much greater understanding and ability to implement these features in a more effective manner.

With vPCs, I learned about their advanced integration with HSRP and VRRP, which enables both HSRP, and VRRP to operate in active/active mode. I learned about the proper configuration of spanning tree, the use of "pseudo" information, and ARP synchronization.

The pages in the QoS chapter have become quit worn. The QoS architecture in NX-OS has transformed from the IOS implementation. The QoS hardware architecture is different and the CLI is more advanced.

The Chapter on Cisco Nexus 1000v is tremendous. 154 pages are devoted to the Nexus 1000v, Virtual Security Gateway, and VXLAN. The chapter begins with brief introduction to VMware and Hypervisors and moves in to architectural concepts of virtual switching. The authors detail Nexus 1000v installation, registering 1000v plug-ins with VMware Virtual Center, creating Uplink Profiles, and configuring VMware Hosts. Configuration steps are reinforced with example CLI and screenshots.

This is a tremendous book. It has already become one of the most used books in my arsenal technical book. I strongly recommend NX-OS and Cisco Nexus Switching: Next-Generation Data Center Architectures (2nd Edition) (Networking Technology).

Ron fuller is a speaker at network live for some time now and I can tell you that this book is much better written than the 1st edition.

The book starts with a light introduction to NX-OS, this chapter can help a lot if you are not familiar with the syntax or hardware. Then things are going deeper with STP, EIGRP, OSPF, BGP, FHRP, and features that are not available on regular Catalyst (vPC / FP)
Multicast will also be covered and in a nice way since the author speaks at Cisco Live about this particular subject .. So you won't be disapointed on this one :P
The regular features like CoPP and DAI will also be covered regarding Nexus Devices.
Be prepared for some virtualization too since N1000V is a part of the book !

Nexus devices are well known to own unified ports, which means that they can be IP/FC/FCoE ports so there is one chapter that covers this as well
Authors cover new technologies like OTV and LISP so it is exciting as well to learn about new technologies instead of just learning what is different from IOS

The book is finaly written in a very concise manner and I would like to thank the authors because I learnt a lot reading this book.
