The first incarnation of this spellbinding account of an American doctor's experience on walkabout in Australia was a "peaceful self-published work." As such, it stirred up quite a bit of controversy and sold more than 370,000 copies. Very few of these ended up on library shelves, however, and HarperCollins is banking on an ongoing demand with a 250,000-copy first printing, a decision bolstered by a Literary Guild special release designation. Does this quiet little book merit such faith and enthusiasm? Yes. Why? Because Morgan's spiritual journey is as compelling as any classical myth. Morgan has called her narrative a work of fiction to protect the identities of her Aboriginal guides, to conceal the locations of sacred places, and to let readers interpret her tale as they see fit. In fact, she wants us to be as open as she was when her adventure began. Morgan believed she was being taken to an awards luncheon for her work with urban Aborigines when, sporting a fancy new suit, she climbed into a jeep and headed out of town, but hours later, she found herself at the edge of Australia's outback clad only in a thin shift, watching her possessions go up in flames. Her guides, telepathic and spiritually advanced descendants of a 50,000-year-old tradition, call themselves the "real people" and refer to Westerners as "mutants." Morgan's trek across the heart of Australia involved a series of increasingly revelatory and even miraculous occurrences. But that hasn't stopped HarperCollins from picking it up and printing more. During her travels with the Aborigines, Morgan learns their customs, and she believes that she has come to a deep understanding and appreciation of their culture. The conflation of fact with fiction, and the assumption that the distinction doesn't matter, is bothersome. I found this book the third most important book I have every read. The first was "Freedom From the Known" by Krishnamurti, the second was "On Having No Head" by Douglas Harding, and now "Mutant Message Down Under". The reason these books have been important to me personally is that each has produced a paradigm shift enabling a clearer, less deluded perception of life on Earth. Each work has brought me a little closer to reality; by this I mean they have helped me to shed pain bearing illusions, life has become easier, more enjoyable.
It is interesting to see that the negative reviews of this book have a very emotional, angry quality about them. If a book is so worthless why bother going to the trouble and taking the time to write about it at all? A playwright once said that when the audience burns down the theatre you know you've hit a home truth. Marlo Morgan has definitely hit something of the truth with this work.
The style may be simple, but then so was Steinbeck's when he wrote the "Pearl". The simplicity of the writing reflects the simplicity of the life style being portrayed.
This is a book for seekers of spirit. The less materialistic you are the more you'll love it. Enjoy.

This is supposedly a true story of a woman kidnapped and 'forced' to do a walkabout with an Aboriginal tribe called the Real People. While a very spiritual book, I find it terribly hard to put this in a non fiction catagory.
I believe Ms. Morgan took bits and pieces of stories and beliefs she has heard and tried to make them her own. And in doing so, created a very unbelievable list of characters and situations.
If the book had been written as fiction I believe I would have enjoyed it more, and found the unbelievable to be acceptable. As it was, I spent more time shaking my head at what we are expected to believe is real.
Read this book if you want a quick spirtual fix, but take it with a grain of salt!

The protagonist claims to have spent a brief amount of time with a culture she knows nothing about. If this really happened, I imagine that some serious hallucinogens were used or the author was experiencing some sort of psychogenic fugue in which memory of her events has been heavily distorted.
The book is unbelievably pretentious and poorly written...I think I wrote a book similar to this when I was in fifth grade about a boy who lived with a wolf out in his backyard...My teacher let me read it in front of the class...Morgan's messages have been heard before. There are many religions that have similar beliefs as hers with written languages and literature as old as time. I suggest reading some of these. There is nothing inspiring in this...yes, we know that we are destroying our environment and losing touch with nature...yes, we know that.
The mutant message from down under is simple: In America it's easy to make money from recycled wishy-washy cliches and new agey drivel...I can't wait to see the made for TV movie...

Wahrheit - und wenn schon?
