All the usual Christie ingredients are here: a body in a (virtually) locked room, a motley set of characters most of whom have something to hide, and a setting that adds further complications to the basic whodunit. But this mystery wasn't as exciting to read for me as some of her others: I felt that she'd used the same plot elements to better effect elsewhere, and the story seemed to drag during Poirot's lengthy "who could have done it?" inquiry. Still, I thought one part of it was admirable: having worked on digs and other field research projects myself, I felt that her picture of the group dynamics was right on target -- and Poirot's deduction of who done it on the basis of those dynamics was brilliant. (Christie accompanied her archeologist husband on many of his digs, and obviously was a good observer!)

I read all of Christie's mysteries and thrillers in my teenage years, so it is interesting to re-read some of them many 'moons' later. This one is in some respects a locked-room mystery and it is quite entertaining. Ther narrator is a nurse who comes to assist Hercule Poirot who is in-between cases in the Middle East. The novel was first published the mid-thirties and describes an archaelogical site where a murder takes place. As usual everybody has a motive for the murder - some of these motives are a little bit far-fetched and not that convincing. The solution is based on Poirot's famous „little grey cells", but even by lenient standards some aspects are little too far-fetched and pscholgically not that sound, I feel.Still, it is nicely written, keeps you entertained and as long as you don't think too hard about it, the mystery makes for a nice afternoon.

What struck me was the somewhat „colonial" attitude the author seems to have towards the natives in Iraq. Arabs don't have names and they only appear as some kind of exotic backdrop, but are of no relevance and individuality. Some remarks appear downright racist by today's standards. I wonder how this book is received in the Arab world.

"Murder in Mesopotamia" ist quite a typical Agatha Christie mystery. It deals with a group of researchers (under the lead of a celebrated archaeologist named Dr. Leidner) who are working at a dig in Iraq. One day, Dr. Leidner's wife Louise is found murdered in her room at the expedition house. There is no lack of suspects, as alsmost everybody disliked or even hated Mrs Leidner. It seems that her presence had been the cause for great tensions.
None the less it is extremely puzzling who might have had the opportunity to kill her, and so it's up to Hercule Poirot (the famous Belgian detective) to solve this mystery.
I enjoyed reading this book, but it is definitely not the best Poirot-mystery. The ending is also not completely convincing. I'd rather recommend "Death on the Nile", "Appointment with Death" or (very famous for its extremely stunning ending) "The Murder of Roger Ackroyd", if you are not determined to collect the whole series.

Einfach typisch Poirot
Hercule Poirot wieder mal weit weg von England im Einsatz! John Moffat läßt ihn sehr lebendig werden, wenn er die Menschen vernimmt, beobachtet, versucht, sich ein Bild... Lesen Sie weiter...

Slow Paced, Not Witty, and Implausible Premise
I love everything Agatha wrote (well, more or less), but this book is far from her best. It drags, as other readers have mentioned, and the Christie wit is less pronounced than... Lesen Sie weiter...

Good , but wasn't enough fast-paced for me
