After a musher has died in what seemed to be an accident, State Trooper Alex Jensen and his younger colleague, Philip Becker, are called in to investigate.
During the arduous race three mushers die and one comes close. Alex Jensen suspects that one of the mushers might be sabotaging fellow-mushers, who are among the first in the field, in order to win the race. It is a moot question, however who of the mushers might have enough of a motif to act like that. With the help of Jessie Arnold, a participating musher, Alex Jensen tries to solve the chilling mystery while at the same time he tries not to fall in love with her.
Sue Henry has managed to make me feel as if I were a musher and enduring the physicals as well as the mental strain of participating the Iditarod-race... feeling the exhaustion, the cold and experiencing the fear of what might happen to whom next. Moreover I learned facts and figures about mushing I didn't even think I would be remotely interested in (but I am now!).
The characters are thorougly believable, the mystery is fast-paced and I did have difficulties to put it down. The author gives hints for the reader to figure out who the perp might be, but I didn't know whether I was right until the very last pages.
The depictions of landscape and climate are wonderful and vivid. Henry's style of writing reminds me of Nevada Barr's excellent Anna-Pigeon-series.
Result: A must-have for every mystery-fan! Especially for those who don't know they are mushers in their hearts of hearts ;-)
