PreS-K. Fabric artist Beaton uses soft textiles to gently illustrate this charming collection of 22 lullabies. Felt, sequins, bric-a-brac, buttons, and beads are incorporated into her embroidered applique designs, which provide the background for the text of familiar as well as lesser-known lullabies and bedtime poems; "Rock-a-Bye, Baby," "All the Pretty Horses," and "Brahms' Lullaby" join Walter de la Mare's "Dream Song" and William Blake's "Night," along with more contemporary poems. Twilight landscapes with glittering stars above rolling hills, soft wooly sheep resting in a field, a rocking chair that holds mother and child--all offer comfort to a child on the verge of sleep. Although musical scores are not provided within the book, an accompanying CD is included with new arrangements of traditional tunes and original melodies composed by singer Dana Kletter. Ranging from soft, slow ballads to lively, playful tunes and multiple-voice rounds, these songs are all sung in a pleasing nursery style. Louise Brueggeman

PreSchool-Grade 1-A selection of traditional poems by William Blake, Walter de la Mare, and Rudyard Kipling, among others. Lullabies from Scotland and New Zealand are included, as are better-known bedtime songs, such as "Brahms' Lullaby." Authors and sources are partially acknowledged at the end of the book. Beaton uses a mixture of appliqu‚, beadwork, and embroidery on felt to create richly textured, exquisite illustrations. The verses are set to music and sung by Dana Kletter on an accompanying CD. Kletter has a pleasant, clear voice, and instrumental music is provided by guitar, piano, banjo, accordion, clarinet, and bongos. While preschoolers may not be able to comprehend the subtlety of Beaton's palette and the inventiveness of the needlework, they will enjoy the pictures on a simple level. And parents will appreciate the artistry of these stunning fabric collages.

well paired book and cd set

the beautiful patchwork illustrations of this book are very well matched by the folk style of the songs. though all of these songs are classics, Dana Kletter's original arrangement of them is refreshing in its sound, making them seem entirely new. the gentle tones of the voices and traditional instruments really give a cozy warmth to the lullabies, and really do pair well with the sweet homemade quality of the pictures they accompany.

Great CD for kids and grown-ups

I have used the CD everyday for over 4 years for a total of 2 kids. Both fall asleep to this CD and have done so since they were newborns. Its very relaxing...I have fallen asleep to it myself!! CD still working great. We never really read the book much.

This is a great book and CD. The music is beautiful, and the songs have similar styles/arrangements -- meaning that my baby actually does get lulled to sleep! And once you learn the tunes to the original arrangements (which takes about 4 or 5 listenings), it's really fun to sing along.

Well, my daughter is now [...] and I'm back looking for more book/CD sets like Mrs. Moon. We rediscovered it a few months ago, and read/listen to it every single night before bed. She totally loves it -- in a whole new way! She loves the pictures, and the way the songs match the pictures. (Once she learns to read, I expect we'll move on to the lyrics!) I've never gotten so much mileage out of one book/CD. It's just great!
