Since he's finally solved Trudy's murder, Monk is almost content. And he wants to share that with his brother Ambrose, so he hatches a scheme to kidnap him and take him on a road trip in a rented motorhome. With Natalie along as the navigator, they set out to explore California and possibly even Arizona.
But this being Monk, he can't go on vacation without a mystery or two. Things start out simple enough when Monk explains the mystery behind the popular Mystery Spot on the central coast. But can he deal with leaving a murder scene when Natalie insists they continue their trip?
This is the first book to be set after the conclusion of the TV series, and it picks up from the conclusion. A new character, a replacement for Disher, is introduced, and I really like her. Even Molly gets to make a brief appearance before things really get started.
My problem with this book is that the mystery felt forced into the story. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed watching Ambrose, Monk, and Natalie interact. In fact, watching Ambrose discover so much of the world was enough to keep the pages flying. I want to go on a road trip and see these things again for myself. But Monk is a mystery show, and I had hoped that aspect would turn out to be stronger. Yes, some of the episodes of the show had pretty light mysteries as well, so this isn't a huge issue. As I said, I still found the book hard to put down and very fun.
Those like me still mourning the loss of the show will be entertained with this fun visit with familiar characters. I'll definitely be back for the next visit.
