This Italian production of Die Entfuhrung is impeccable - decorations and costumes are in an oriental style, utilizing exotic colours with striking effect. The orchestra, directed by Zubin Mehta does not utilise 'authentic' instruments, however plays in a delightful way, strings avoiding too much vibrato.
The tenors Rainer Trost (Belmonte) and Mehrzad Montazeri (Pedrillo) sing in a convincing matter. Eva Mei (Constanze) sings with passion the most demanding parts effortlessly . Her aria 'Martern aller Arten' is breathtaking, with the singer's voice blending beautifully with the solo instruments. Patrizia Ciofi (Blonde) contrasts well with Eva Mei, singing in a particularly sweet manner.
However, the real protagonist of the opera is Kurt Rydl singing the role of Osmin. This celebrated Viennese basso shines in this performance, singing and acting in his inimitable way , imparting a comical nature throughout the entire opera. Particularly funny moments in the scenes are the appearances of Osmin's crocodile.
Technically, this DVD is in a true Dolby Digital 5.1 and a widescreen picture which bring to life this wonderful production and make it an unforgettable experience.
