From Booklist

Dahl, who has written liner notes and Smithsonian and Jazz Magazine stories on jazz as well as a jazz history, Stormy Weather: The Music and Lives of a Century of Jazz Women (reprint, 1989), draws on archives and interviews in her involving life of Mary Lou Williams, perhaps the most influential midcentury jazzwoman. Williams, born in Georgia but raised in Pittsburgh, was a natural pianist with a perfect ear who helped her large family by performing at the homes of Steeltown executives. By her early teens, she was on the road; by her midteens, she was married to saxophone player John Williams. And Mary Lou paid attention to all the musicians she met, ultimately winning respect for her performing skill, and composing and arranging music for Goodman, Armstrong, and Ellington, among others. Dahl follows Williams' career into bop, where she maintained key relationships with Bud Powell and Miles Davis, to Europe in the '50s, and then into the Roman Catholic Church, where Williams' spirituality became integral to her musical inspiration. An involving biography of an often unhappy but transcendentally talented jazz artist. Mary Carroll

From Kirkus Reviews

An uninspired but thorough recounting of the life of the once renowned jazz pianist and composer, a ``musician's musician.'' Mary Elfrieda Scruggs was born with a caul, a portent of special powers. And indeed, when Mary was four years old, she repeated note for note the song her mother had just been playing on the piano. Williams never stopped playing, hitting the road as a 14-year-old with a group called Hits `n Bits, playing split weeks and one-nighters across the Midwest, meeting her first husband, saxophonist John Williams. The road trip lasted for years, reaching its apex during the Depression, when she was part of the now celebrated Kansas City jazz scene, playing with Andy Kirk's Clouds of Joy and frequenting after-hours clubsa ``jazz Juilliard,'' says the authorto listen and jam. Williams's fortunes were as volatile as those of any (especially any female) jazzman, and Dahl reports them all in sometimes numbing detail. On the upside, Williams wrote and arranged for such notables as Benny Goodman and Duke Ellington, was booked for lengthy gigs at the chic Cafe Society in New York, cut records, and even had her own national fan club for a while. Her sophisticated Zodiac Suite was performed at Carnegie Hall. But she often shot herself in the foot, developing a gambling addiction and turning down opportunities that could have advanced her finances and her career. Eventually converting to Catholicism, she devoted herself to prayer, good works, and writing sacred music. Her last years were spent teaching at Duke University, where she also worked on a history of jazz. Dahl (Stormy Weather, 1989, not reviewed) appends a discography plus comprehensive lists of Williamss compositions and arrangements and other artists' recordings of her work. A fact- and quote-packed story, the first full-length overview of Williams's life, which cries out desperately for more discriminating interpretation. Mary Lou Williams' jazz experiences are detailed in a biography which covers both her life and career and her role as an Afro-American female musician. Dahl was given unlimited access to the Williams archive and her first full-length biography of Williams makes for an important coverage.

A rewarding experience 18. August 2001

An engagingly written book on a much ignored, extremely talented musician. Mary Lou Williams was (and is) respected by music giants the world over, including the likes of Duke Ellington. This book puts Williams' importance to American music in perspective, and gives her the overdue credit she so obviously deserves.

My recommendation is to put on a MLW disc, sit back and read. It will be a rewarding experience.

Dahl's impressive biography presents a thorough and fascinating portrait of the little known jazz legend Mary Lou Williams. A must-read for all jazz lovers, especially those interested in women's unsung contributions to jazz.
