Moonraker is a treat of a classic Bond spy thriller. There is intrigue at M's exclusive gambling club "Blades" on Park Lane where Sir Hugo Drax, a multi- millionaire business tycoon, revered by the British public because of his Moonraker missile defence programme, has been accruing millions of pounds at the Poker table. Why would Drax wish to make more money? How could he be achieving such success against the world's premier gamblers? As "the best card-player in the service", Bond is called in to find out the answers.
Bond quickly adjudges Drax a "bullying, boorish, loud-mouthed vulgarian" and, more importantly for his mission, a cheat at cards. Bond beats Drax at his own game, winning thousands of pounds and severely unsettling the millionaire in the process. His advice to 007 before leaving the club is: "I should spend the money quickly, Commander Bond." Indeed.
Never one to ignore a hot tip, Bond is preparing to splash his winnings on a Rolls-Bentley Convertible and three diamond clips when he hears of a double-shooting at Drax's Moonraker base. Concerned about the possibility of sabotage, Bond is sent undercover to investigate, but things just don't add up. Why are the workforce all German--this is post-war Britain after all? On the job, Bond meets Special Branch Agent Gala Brand, planted onsite ostensibly as Drax's private secretary. Despite initial fractious relations, the two spies grow to respect each other and eventually discover the frightening and horrific truth about Drax and Moonraker. Here the plot speeds up and we are treated to some vintage Fleming lines: "Bond set his teeth and rode his car as if she was a Lipizaner at the Spanish Riding School in Vienna."

Eine fantastische Geschichte die Ian Fleming seinen gar nicht so mutigen Romanhelden erleben lässt.
Der Kettenrauchende "Commander James Bond RNVSR" braucht eine ganze Weile um zu merken wer der Bösewicht ist, auf dem Weg zu dieser Erkenntnis lernen die Leser/innen viel über Bridge und das Privatleben James Bonds. Wer glaubte, dass es in den Bond-Filmen zuviel Product-Placement gab wird feststellen, dass das nichts war im Vergleich zu der Menge an PP in den Büchern Flemings. Allerdings wird der verwöhnte Konsument schnell feststellen, dass Bonds Geschmack ausgezeichnet ist.
Einzig der offene Sexismus in Flemings Romanen ist heutzutage etwas gewöhnungsbedürftig.

I have to admit that I just couldn't put this book down. Every single page is intriguing and suspenseful, and contains an elaborate plot where ex-Nazi Sir Hugo Drax, head of the Moonraker nuclear missile project, is secretly planning to destroy London to gain revenge for his country's defeat in World War 2. Moonraker is rather like two books in one: the first part of the story centers on a card game at an exclusive gambling club, where 'M' has called Bond to investigate the suspicion of Drax cheating. In a brilliant sequence, Bond discovers Drax's ruse. This sets the stage for the second part, where 007 goes to Dover and finds out the terrifying secret about Drax and Moonraker.... Ian Fleming provides some intriguing touches looking into Bond's thoughts about his job, not to mention making Drax look like a grotesquely evil figure, and the Bond girl Gala Brand is impressive in that she plays a key part in discovering Drax's evil scheme, but she never really falls in love with Bond - rather an anomaly. In summary, Moonraker is a classic James Bond thriller from Mr. Fleming and is every bit as good as the film of the same name. (Interesting point: in the book Fleming compares Drax as a Lonsdale-type, in the film Drax is played by actor Michael Lonsdale. Coincidence?)

On his side he has the beautiful woman from Scotland Yard, Gala Brand. Together the two agents make a dreadful discovery: the Moonraker, a rocket which has been built by Drax for protecting England from his enemies, isn't quite that what it pretends to be. The time runs against Bond and Brand and at the end they have one last chance to stop the mad man and foil his evil plan.
A masterful written and readable book which contains all the elements you need for a great 007-adventure. Thrilling and amazing, one of Ian Fleming's best James Bond novels!
