More than just baked beans and cod!
Given the growing number of guidebooks to Boston, you may rightly wonder what sets this one apart from the rest. Like many others, my guide is full of practical information about museums, lodgings, dining, and transportation. But for me, that's just the beginning. I don't just tell you where to go and how much it'll cost--my descriptions of Boston's many attractions are woven into a lively tapestry of historical and cultural fact distilled from a wide variety of sources, including my own 18 years of residency (and yes, you scholars, an annotated bibliographical Booklist is included). Likewise, I do more than give mere thumbnail descriptions and prices for scores of accommodations, from backpacker hostels to luxury hotels and distinctive B&Bs. I also provide tips on how to obtain discounts, what time of year to avoid if you don't want to be hit with "special event" rate hikes, and budget-friendly alternatives outside the city. And while I certainly like helping people save money on where they sleep, I like sharing good meals even more. So you can be sure the nearly 200 restaurant listings will keep you abreast of the best places to eat all over the Boston area, from highly regarded little take-out counters to four-star hangouts for wine-sipping gourmands. (Just don't look for the usual tourist traps; you won't find 'em here.) Arts and entertainment? Yes again--be it live theater or live music, ballet or spoken word, the Boston Handbook includes it all, with special attention given to such local institutions as Irish pubs, puppet theater, folk dancing, and arthouse cinemas. Want to take a guided tour? Look no further: whether you intend to walk, ride, watch whales, or taste beer, the Boston Handbook has the specifics. And for those hardy souls who seek some outdoor urban recreation, I've included all you need to know about bike and skate rentals, bike paths, and camping on the Boston Harbor Islands.

The Boston Handbook also includes daytrips to popular destinations outside Boston, including Salem, Plymouth, Lowell, Lexington, and Concord. I never assume you have a car, either: details on taking public transportation are always included wherever applicable.

Could anything else possibly be crammed into this handy-sized book? Yes! The best index in the business, and the most accurate, up-to-date color maps to Boston that you can buy. (Sorry, AAA and DeLorme: someone sold you data from the 1970s, minimally updated in the mid-'80s.) But you needn't take my word for all this. Beg, borrow, or buy a copy of the Boston Handbook and see for yourself. And after you try it out, let me know what you think!
