Der "kleine" Lonely Planet ist ein fantastischer Reiseführer im Hosentaschenformat.
Die "Encounter" Serie eignet sich sicherlich nicht um einen umfassenden Eindruck vom Reiseziel zu erhalten, dafür sollte man schon auf die vollformatigen Reiseführer zurückgreifen. Der originäre Einsatzzweck ist vielmehr die schnelle Orientierung und Information vor Ort. Das Buch enthält einen kurzen allgemeinen Teil, der Basisinformationen zum Reiseziel, Highlights und Erkundungstouren in der Länge von einem bis drei Tagen umfasst. Im Anschluß wird geordnet nach Stadtteilen ein Überblick über die dort gelegenen Sehenswürdigkeiten, Restaurants, Bars, Geschäfte, Museen und Theater gegeben. Zu jedem Stadtteil findet man eine kleine Stadtteilkarte. Im Anhang befindet sich ein Faltplan.
Auf der letzten Urlaubsreise hat sich der Reiseführer als ständiger Begleiter hervorragend präsentiert. Besonders die Restaurantempfehlungen waren aktuell und wirklich sehr gut.
Uneingeschränkte Empfehlung!

great city book

picked this little book up for my 3.5d trip to montreal, and it was just perfect - both in size and detail. it's organized by neighborhoods- what to do, eat, play, drink in those areas. it's a concept that works well since that's how i tend to explore cities anyways, and this pocket sized book fits perfectly in my coat pocket.
it's not helpful for hotels, but i prefer to do that sort of research on tripadvisor beforehand anyways. i also would not recommend it for exploring quebec city - which is barely a page or two afterthought stuffed in.
for those visiting montreal, the two things the book didnt have a chance to update:
1) 747 express bus from the airport - run by the city, it's CA$7 per trip, but you can pick up 1 and 3-day passes which cover both the airport bus and all metro/buses in the city. it's a service that just started mar2010.
2) bixi - montreal has this awesome bike sharing program where you can retrieve and deposit a bike at outdoor stations throughout the city. the city's also planned plenty of bike lanes to keep you safe.

For Quebec City...Skip It

My family and I are taking a trip to Quebec City this winter and so I went to the library and grabbed a copy of this book because it was the most updated travel guide that they had for the region. I have to say that I was disappointed. While there was a plethora of information on Montreal, there was only a few pages for all of Quebec City. The descriptions were limited and did not include any "hidden treasures" of the city. Instead, it seemed to focus only on the basic tourist attractions. The one thing that I enjoyed about this book that other tour guides did not have is color photographs. I loved the beautiful photos but if you're looking for trip guidance, I would find another guide book.
