Perhaps it is because Mongolia is changing so fast (individual visas were only issued from 1 June 1997) but this book is one of Lonely Planet's worst - and that's sad because Mongolia is a fantastic country. For example, almost all the backbacker accommodations mentioned in the UB section have closed down, and it doesn't mention Gana's Guest House which is the only place to stay if you're on a budget. Also, it underestimates the travel times between different towns, and makes some of them sound quite big when in fact they are tiny. But don't wait for a new edition - go to Mongolia before it changes!

Ich war schon 13 x mal in der Mongolei und dieser Reiseführer hat mir immer sehr gut geholfen. Besonders auf dem Land ist er unschlagbar. Ich hoffe es kommt einmal so etwas auf dem deutschsprachigen Markt heraus.

i cannot recommend this lonely planet book. There are so many mistakes and the maps are just miserable. For example it is said that "fly mongolia" offers 4 WD car rides, but they don't offer this service since 3 years. Besids a lot of attractions are not mentioned and the time estimations for a longer bus rides are totally wrong (add 50-150%). The places that are highly recommended ("our pick") are loaded with toursits since everybody has that book. Also the book misses structure so it is very hard to make plans with it. The phrases at the end of the book should be more, but i guess that's because lonely planet wants you to buy the extra phrase book. On my trip i wanted to burn the book a couple of times, so if u plan a trip without a guide get some more books in addition.
