Modoc is the joint biography of a man and an elephant born in a small German circus town on the same day in 1896. Bram was the son of an elephant trainer, Modoc the daughter of his prize performer. The boy and animal grew up devoted to each other. When the Wunderzircus was sold to an American, with no provision to take along the human staff, Bram stowed away on the ship to prevent being separated from his beloved Modoc. A shipwreck off the Indian coast and a sojourn with a maharajah were only the beginning of the pair's incredible adventures. They battled bandits, armed revolutionaries, cruel animal trainers, and greedy circus owners in their quest to stay together. They triumphed against the odds and thrilled American circus audiences with Modoc's dazzling solo performances, only to be torn apart with brutal suddenness, seemingly never to meet again. Hollywood animal trainer Ralph Helfer rescued Modoc from ill-treatment and learned her astonishing story when Bram rediscovered her at Helfer's company. His emotional retelling of this true-life adventure epic will make pulses race and bring tears to readers' eyes. --Wendy Smith

From Booklist

*Starred Review* Gr. 1-3. Helfer's astonishing account of an abused orphan who bonds with an elephant may seem like a myth, but it's true. The boy, Bram, and the elephant, Modoc, are born at the same time in a circus in Germany. They grow up together, performing their thrilling act, until Modoc is sold to a cruel owner. But the friends refuse to be parted. They come up with a daring plan, and, after surviving a series of disasters, including nearly drowning in the ocean, make their way to America, where they become stars in the Ringling Brothers Circus. When Modoc is burned while rescuing children from a circus fire, the brokenhearted friends are forcibly separated. Lewin, who also illustrated Yukio Tsuchiya's Faithful Elephants (1988) and the 1994 Caldecott Honor Book Peppe the Lamplighter (1993), by Elisa Bartone, is at his very best here. His gorgeous, watercolor double-page spreads show the huge elephant and the rescue drama, but even more stunning are the depictions of the bond between the lifelong friends, the exhilarating public performances, the wrenching partings, and the loving reunion years later, which Helfer, who owned Modoc for the last two decades of her life, was able to witness. Modoc and Bram knowingly or not had a spiritutal pact - that they would love each other and be part of each other to their dying day. If you want your heart broken and mended and broken again only to be restored to pure joy then let yourself fall in love with Modoc. She will love with a heart bigger than her elephant body and you will feel Bram's devotion to her and know it can be no other way. Not that he must love Modoc but that he doesn't know how to not love her. What a beautiful place to be in. Enjoy this book with all your heart and you will cry with joy.

Just finished this and even though I agree with most of the other reviews, I can't help but add my additional enthusiasm. I think this is one of my all-time favorites. Beautiful, magical, spiritual, moving. There's something for everyone here.

If you like elephants, you'll like this "true" story, but may be put off by some of its silly elements. The author thinks the sound of a calliope is "oom pah pah." Also that x-rays were available in a hospital in India...in 1912, and that WWI era biplanes carried machine guns...on their WINGS, among other anachronisms. If not for the sex and the violent episodes, it would be a great kid's book.

Wonderful Story of Pachyderm Devotion
It's been a while since a book produced the sort of emotive response, upon completion, that Modoc did. Lesen Sie weiter...

Good story, but poorly written.
I am surprised by the overly positive reviews. The dialog is bland and contrived. The author attempted to fictionalize entire scenes out of scant detail. Lesen Sie weiter...

Good...but where's the documentation?
The story was great, and despite the somewhat labored(ok, amatuerish, but sweet)writing I really enjoyed it.

Credibility and the claim of a true story is another issue entirely. Lesen Sie weiter...
