In Detail

Bootstrap changes the way we develop websites in the frontend, and mobile web development has grown incredibly over the past few years. There are over 1.2 billion mobile web users in the world, and 25% of those mobile web users are exclusively mobile. Now, Bootstrap has also gone mobile-first. The mobile-first version of Bootstrap lets you first think about the mobile site and then think about how it expands to larger screens. To build websites for mobile devices that improve the overall experience of your customers, you need to be skilled at using the mobile-first feature of Bootstrap.

Mobile-first Bootstrap covers the new features in Bootstrap 3 and focuses on how they affect development from a mobile-first perspective. It will show you how to use Bootstrap 3 for developing websites for mobile and how to use that knowledge for your own development projects.

The book starts by highlighting the new changes that have been made to Bootstrap 3. After learning about these new features, you will discover how to easily build websites for mobile. You will learn how to run Bootstrap 3 Docs to customize Bootstrap for your needs. You will then be introduced to the new mobile grid system, the responsive utilities, and how to use mobile-first for navigation. Then, using JavaScript, you will explore the power of data attributes and progressive enhancement before starting to develop a web project from scratch. The last section of the book will discuss the main issues that affect the performance of Bootstrap as well as the issues that arise while dealing with responsive images.

Mobile-first Bootstrap guides you through everything you need to know about Bootstrap 3 and helps you to understand and use the mobile-first approach in your own projects with the help of an example project.

A practical, step-by-step tutorial on developing websites for mobile using Bootstrap.

Who this book is for

This book is for anyone who wants to get acquainted with the new features available in Bootstrap 3 and who wants to develop websites with the mobile-first feature of Bootstrap. The reader should have a basic knowledge of Bootstrap as a frontend framework.

Having worked on several web projects recently I am very interested in latest trends, mobile first being one of the most interesting design trends. I also used the Twitter Bootstrap framework in some sites. Hence, I worked my way through Mobile-First bootstrap with the goal to get to know more about the guiding principles for mobile first sites and actual implementations using Bootstrap 3. My goal was to use it as a quick start for having my next project start as mobile first using Bootstrap 3.

In a nutshell, this book offers a lot of information and so many useful resources. My only gripe is, that at times it seems like it wants to put too much information in the approximately 92 pages. Novice readers can easily get lost in the many tips about possibly helpful tools that I would only advise experienced web developers to read through this book.

The contents include getting Bootstrap 3.0 on your machine, the reasons for going mobile first, and installing the tools required to run the Bootstrap docs with Bower and grunt (which is what I found the least useful part for my expectations towards the book but nonetheless quite interesting). The second chapter explains the grid model and breakpoints as well as some other CSS fundamentals with Bootstrap. This chapter is really useful, especially if you are new to Bootstrap. Next up is a discussion of how to utilize JavaScript in a mobile first approach. Chapter 4 finally brings it all together and gives a walkthrough of how to build your own mobile first project. This is in fact my favorite part of the book as it puts all theoretical aspects to real life, I would have loved to have this in more detail. In the final chapter the performance topic is addressed, which is basically again a collection of helpful tips.

2.0 von 5 Sternen I think the writing is atrocious. Sample chapter available, decide for yourself. 28. Januar 2014
Von Steven - Veröffentlicht auf
The publisher makes the complete Chapter 2 available online here: [removed]. You will have to Google it, I guess.

I read the entire thing and found myself re-reading sentences over and over again because of the incredibly bad writing. It seems clear to me that English is not the author's native language. Less clear is whether or not the author's work was poorly translated from some other language, or if the author just did the best that he could with a mediocre grasp of English. Either way, I will not be purchasing this book. I gave it two stars because at least the book was quick to market. Bootstrap 3 is essentially brand new from a published book point of view.

Here are some samples of the poor writing:

"To follow up on this currently changing paradigm, the development cycle finds its way to follow this new scenario."

"We got in touch with the issues with relative units. We saw that Bootstrap tries to explore the EM unit but still has a counterpart that overlaps its benefits, so Bootstrap still has to deal with pixels and use it to define font sizing."

"With so many limitations on one side, and the power of flexibility on another side, the mobile and tablet just cannot be a substitute for the huge and wide desktop screens."

Nothing new that isn't on the official Bootstrap website. Disappointing. Rather look on the bootstrap site which is actually quite good.

It's a really good book!
Simple and easy to follow, all the examples are very clear and well written.
Also it's excellent book if you already had worked with other versions of bootstrap such as 2.0.x the author show to you a good overview of the new features!
4.0 von 5 Sternen A good overview of mobile first development :) 14. Februar 2014

The other day, I could put a hand on Mobile First Bootstrap so I gave it a try. Why is that ? Well, I’m mostly a Java developer, and there is no plan yet to move our 10 years old web app to something recent, but still I’m willing to keep an eye on Mobile First and the like, so Mobile First Bootstrap looked attractive.

In short, with my limited daily use of html and mobile related web apps, it was really instructive. The book does a lot to present the differences between desktop and mobile and provides helpful ways of solving them both. Well, actually, turns out the help comes from the third version of Bootstrap, but still, the overview and the solutions presented are interesting. For example, the way Bootstrap components display differently depending on the resolution is really impressive. And it’s not something straightforward to get by just looking at the github project, as I did before.

I like as well the way tools and useful libraries are covered… My coworkers already had some samples of it. IMHO it’s a part which is always bit tricky to get purely online (which tools, which libraries to go to for what), so I really appreciate.

However, I feel some parts would have deserved a deeper coverage, especially the bit about touch enhancement through jquery mobile, which then interacts with Bootstrap own’s JavaScript. If ever I want to go more into this direction, I would have to dig around significantly: the book doesn’t provide enough leads, IMHO, which it does for the rest.

In terms of target audience, I guess people already pretty familiar with Bootstrap would already know most of the content of the book. Neither does the book contain any extra hint on how to make the latest crazy hot design magic.

In the end, a book worth reading, putting my web design knowledge on a better foot. Exactly what I wanted !
3.0 von 5 Sternen Lots of information, not for the beginner 31. Januar 2014

About me: I have not used a framework before and like most website developers I am interested in the latest technology for responsive website design. I had heard of Bootstrap but never experimented with it.

I thought Mobile first Bootstrap was an interesting read. It is a short book, about 86 pages, but was packed with information. At first I assumed this would be a quick walkthrough of Bootstrap or a tutorial on how to build a Bootstrap site. Rather then either of those I discovered the book is more of a discussion one would have with a close friend; a friend who is very passionate about Bootstrap and passionate about the right way to implement it.

The book is packed with a plethora of insider tips, links to articles that explain some of the topics in the book and a running discussion of the best way to build a web app and frustrations over some of the technology that is not ready for production.

This book is not necessarily for the novice who is looking for clear instructions on how to build a new site. Although chapter four covers building a simple Twitter app, I think it was thrown in more as an afterthought. As an example the author and Bootstrap rely on using LESS for style sheets - but there is no mention of how to use the LESS syntax.

In the beginning of the book the author mentions how Bootstrap is now implemented with Jekyll and Bower and instructs one on how to install a local environment, along with git, ruby and node.js. I had assumed I would use this environment in building the app later in the book. I later find out all these dependencies were to host a local version of the Bootstrap docs.

As I said in the beginning, this book is packed full of information, especially for the number of pages. Choosing how to use this information is up to you. Personally I now have a greater appreciation for breakpoints and semantic markup.
