I highly recommend pediatrician Chris White’s wonderful new book, Mindful Discipline. Written with co-author and psychologist Shauna Shapiro, these two do a great job of pointing out specific things parents can do in the moment to make their home more harmonious and have more fun!

I’m a practical pediatrician. Theory is wonderful, but ultimately it comes down to the choices you make in the moment. So how do we change our patterns and do something differently? Stop the yell? Or even the swat on the tush?

This book really provides a lesson in mindfulness as a parent, WITHOUT THE GUILT. You feel as you read, that the authors are right there with you in the daily struggles we all go through as parents. And that each moment is an opportunity, to stop, regroup and be mindful of how we would like to proceed.

Most powerfully, the message here is that you know what to do already. Parents today are bombarded with endless information that creates an atmosphere of anxiety and self-doubt. I was looking for directives when I initially picked up this book but the reality is there is not one perfect right solution for every family, and you have to feel your way to the right solution for your family. There will also be challenges presented in reading this book- how do you become more mindful of your own behavior? Be prepared to work first on yourself. As I have seen time and again, when we change ourselves, we change the spectrum of responses we see in our children.

Provides an intuitive and supportive counterpoint to the extremes of authoritarian 1-2-3 parenting vs. attachment gone too permissive parenting.

Highly recommended for the toddler through teen years.

As a parent of two young children, I found Mindful Discipline incredibly useful. I’ve read a variety of parenting books over the years, but I got so much out of this book. The mindfulness awareness exercises helped me put the approach of “mindful discipline” into practice. The authors’ personal stories are easy to relate to and provide honest illustrations that bring the material to life. This is a wonderful book that I will highly recommend to friends and family.

I had the incredible fortune this week of picking up Mindful Discipline, by mindfulness expert Shauna Shapiro, PhD and pediatrician Chris White, MD. This book spoke directly to the heart of my experience as a parent navigating the perils and trials of early adolescence with my 12-year-old son. Mindful Discipline provided an eloquent, yet clear and intuitive framework for seeing and meeting my child’s needs through “unconditional love, space, mentorship, healthy boundaries, and mis-takes.” One of the great challenges of parenting is that there is no manual, no real way of knowing if we’re doing it right. The power of this book is that it provides a wealth of information, resources, practices and suggestions, while at the same time affirming and reinforcing the inner wisdom of the heart that all loving parents already know and possess. I was particularly impressed by the grace with which the authors connected the principles of mindful discipline to the child’s neurobiological development. As a parent, I find this kind of knowledge grounding and empowering in the face of the complexity and messiness of everyday family life. Having read Mindful Discipline, I feel renewed and able to respond more intentionally to my child. I recommend this book wholeheartedly to parents who wish to raise healthy, self-disciplined, compassionate children—and that’s every parent I know.

Parenting, without an iota of doubt, is one of the most taxing but satisfying engagements (or duty) in life. It adds color to life, gives meaning to our existence and purpose even to those parents who have been wasting the most productive years of their lives. It is a sacred duty, and a blessing not granted to everyone. Sadly, many do not understand the magnitude this arduous and time-consuming responsibility. Parent is neither easy nor difficult. This book has inspired me to change may ways in which I interact with my child on a daily basis - one of those "a ha" reads where you can't believe how much you didn't know. Hats off to the authors for providing an easy to read and enjoyable book for the parents who are trying to do things in a new way, not just the way most of us were raised. On my top 3 parenting book list!
