Pressestimmen

"If you raise your children with respect for who they are, nourishing compassion, clarity, and wise limits, they will bloom and blossom. The tools for mindfully doing so are here in these pages."--Jack Kornfield, PhD, author of "A Path with Heart"

Kurzbeschreibung

Raising happy, compassionate, and responsible children requires both love and limits. In Mindful Discipline, internationally recognized mindfulness expert Shauna Shapiro and pediatrician Chris White weave together ancient wisdom and modern science to provide new perspectives on parenting and discipline.

Grounded in mindfulness and neuroscience, this pioneering book redefines discipline and outlines the five essential elements necessary for children to thrive: unconditional love, space for children to be themselves, mentorship, healthy boundaries, and mis-takes that create learning and growth opportunities. In this book, you will also discover parenting practices such as setting limits with love, working with difficult emotions, and forgiveness and compassion meditations that place discipline within a context of mindfulness. This relationship-centered approach will restore your confidence as a parent and support your children in developing emotional intelligence, self-discipline, and resilience—qualities they need for living an authentic and meaningful life.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Want to “find greater joy in your parenting”? Read this book. 27. Mai 2014
Von Sarabenet Sequeira, MD, FAAP - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
I highly recommend pediatrician Chris White’s wonderful new book, Mindful Discipline. Written with co-author and psychologist Shauna Shapiro, these two do a great job of pointing out specific things parents can do in the moment to make their home more harmonious and have more fun!

I’m a practical pediatrician. Theory is wonderful, but ultimately it comes down to the choices you make in the moment. So how do we change our patterns and do something differently? Stop the yell? Or even the swat on the tush?

This book really provides a lesson in mindfulness as a parent, WITHOUT THE GUILT. You feel as you read, that the authors are right there with you in the daily struggles we all go through as parents. And that each moment is an opportunity, to stop, regroup and be mindful of how we would like to proceed.

Most powerfully, the message here is that you know what to do already. Parents today are bombarded with endless information that creates an atmosphere of anxiety and self-doubt. I was looking for directives when I initially picked up this book but the reality is there is not one perfect right solution for every family, and you have to feel your way to the right solution for your family. There will also be challenges presented in reading this book- how do you become more mindful of your own behavior? Be prepared to work first on yourself. As I have seen time and again, when we change ourselves, we change the spectrum of responses we see in our children.

Provides an intuitive and supportive counterpoint to the extremes of authoritarian 1-2-3 parenting vs. attachment gone too permissive parenting.

Highly recommended for the toddler through teen years.

5.0 von 5 Sternen MINDFUL DISCIPLINE NEEDS MINDFUL PARENTING! 29. Mai 2014
Von the GreatReads! - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
Parenting, without an iota of doubt, is one of the most taxing but satisfying engagements (or duty) in life. It adds color to life, gives meaning to our existence and purpose even to those parents who have been wasting the most productive years of their lives. It is a sacred duty, and a blessing not granted to everyone. Sadly, many do not understand the magnitude this arduous and time-consuming responsibility. Parent is neither easy nor difficult. It is not a “thing” to be taken for granted. Failure brings about many heartaches and troubles which can last even a lifetime.

Mindful Discipline: A Loving Approach to Setting Limits and Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child by Shauna L. Shapiro, PhD with Chris White, MD and foreword by Christine Carter, PhD & Dean Ornish, MD is a truly helpful and resourceful book that will push readers out of their comfort zone day after day to enable them to be better parents, raising children who will make them proud in the years to come.

Mindful Discipline contains two parts, with the first part entitled A Discipline We Can Feel Proud Of containing five insightful and resourceful chapters:
1. WHY DISCIPLINE MATTERS: The Key to a Healthy Mind and a Fulfilling Life
2. HOW SELF-DISCIPLINE DEVELOPS: Growing From Impulses to Judgments to Authenticity
3. MINDFULNESS: Nourishment for Life and Parenting
4. THE MINDFUL DISCIPLINE APPROACH: Transmitting Self-Discipline
5. RELATIONSHIP: The Source of Nourishment

The second part of the book is entitled The Five Essential Elements of Mindful Discipline, and contains 7 chapters:
6. UNCONDITIONAL LOVE: Preserving Trust and Inherent Value
7. SPACE: Supporting Autonomy, Competence, and Responsibility
8. MENTORSHIP: Promoting Healthy Habits, Strong Values, and Emotional Intelligence
9. HEALTHY BOUNDARIES: Encouraging Impulse Control and Adaptability
10. MIS-TAKES: The Gifts of Compassion, Humility, and Forgiveness
11. THE HEART OF MATURITY: How Emotional Intelligence and Resilience Are Grown
12. EPILOGUE

The appendices at the end of the book provide useful materials through which one can better understand a person. DISCIPLINE AND THE BRAIN, THE BASICS OF ATTACHMENT, QUALITIES AND CAPACITIES OF A HEALTHY, SELF-DISCIPLINED INDIVIDUAL and THE PROMISE AND PERILS OF PRAISE are discussions which will open the eyes of many parents and help them to see things in a new perspective. This is a book which should be in the hands of every parent.

As a parent of two young children, I found Mindful Discipline incredibly useful. I’ve read a variety of parenting books over the years, but I got so much out of this book. The mindfulness awareness exercises helped me put the approach of “mindful discipline” into practice. The authors’ personal stories are easy to relate to and provide honest illustrations that bring the material to life. This is a wonderful book that I will highly recommend to friends and family.

5.0 von 5 Sternen I LOVED THIS BOOK!! 7. Juni 2014
Von Sarah de Sousa - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
I had the incredible fortune this week of picking up Mindful Discipline, by mindfulness expert Shauna Shapiro, PhD and pediatrician Chris White, MD. This book spoke directly to the heart of my experience as a parent navigating the perils and trials of early adolescence with my 12-year-old son. Mindful Discipline provided an eloquent, yet clear and intuitive framework for seeing and meeting my child’s needs through “unconditional love, space, mentorship, healthy boundaries, and mis-takes.” One of the great challenges of parenting is that there is no manual, no real way of knowing if we’re doing it right. The power of this book is that it provides a wealth of information, resources, practices and suggestions, while at the same time affirming and reinforcing the inner wisdom of the heart that all loving parents already know and possess. I was particularly impressed by the grace with which the authors connected the principles of mindful discipline to the child’s neurobiological development. As a parent, I find this kind of knowledge grounding and empowering in the face of the complexity and messiness of everyday family life. Having read Mindful Discipline, I feel renewed and able to respond more intentionally to my child. I recommend this book wholeheartedly to parents who wish to raise healthy, self-disciplined, compassionate children—and that’s every parent I know.

This book has inspired me to change may ways in which I interact with my child on a daily basis - one of those "a ha" reads where you can't believe how much you didn't know. Hats off to the authors for providing an easy to read and enjoyable book for the parents who are trying to do things in a new way, not just the way most of us were raised. On my top 3 parenting book list!
