Planning on no pain meds? You NEED to read this book! 21. Juni 2013
Von Chantelle C. Tibbs - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
I only made it half way through this book and my son came early and even having only read half the book, I honestly don't think there is enough space for me to praise "Mindful Birthing" on here. I can't say thank you enough! When it came to having a natural child birth I can say the two biggest factors that kept me going were having a doula and reading this book. EVERYTHING Nancy says is dead on. I was just expecting to be in pain, I didn't know that the times between contractions are actually pleasurable because of oxytocin and that fearing the pain of the next contraction or getting caught up on the pain of the last one causes our body to produce adrenaline and that blocks oxytocin slowing down labor and making it more painful. In the 2nd part of labor I was actually falling in and out of sleep. There was a woman across the hall screaming her head off and I listened as the nurses mentioned all the pain meds they gave her and I had people in shock with how calm I was with no meds. My boyfriend couldn't believe how calm I was. I'm the kind of person who couldn't handle pain before I was afraid of it. I cried over a stubbed toe. I am no longer afraid of physical pain. I had my birth at the hospital with a midwife, we actually brought a birthing tub and had high hopes of our son being born in the water but they took me out of the water to take my vitals and he was born 15 minutes later in the bed.

The pain management exercises using ice are GENIUS! I found myself using the body scan very often. I was able to successfully investigate a slight pain in my right foot during several contractions and focus on the parts of my body that didn't hurt and felt just fine.

Every birth is different but in my experience I agree with Nancy, the first time I "couldn't take it anymore" I got in the hot water and it just REALLY helped me out. The 2nd time I couldn't take it anymore I was 10 contractions away from giving birth. I actually begged for pain meds around 10 centimeters and the nurse laughed and said "sweetie it's too late for that, you are 10 centimeters dilated you needed to ask for that 2 centimeters ago" I couldn't believe it. Avoiding looking at the clock REALLY helped. I didn't want to hear how far apart my contractions were and didn't want to hear anyone in the room talk about any plans or anything to do with clock time, that sounds crazy but it helped a lot just to keep me present. Ironically my son was on the same page because up until the last contraction my contractions were never the same time apart. I think the last two were like 10, 3, 5.

So YES I was in labor for 12 hours and YES it hurt! But it was doable! And with that pain comes an amazing power that follows after. The rewards are endless. Thanks to this book and the support of my doula, my boyfriend, mom and amazing friends. Again, I know every birth is different but in all honesty this book had me practicing techniques that made it possible. The two most difficult parts for me were when I felt my sons head pass through my pelvis, The pelvis actually cracks open, and the sensation is intense, but by the time you have time to judge it it's over, it's very fast. The other part is the burning "ring of fire" at the very end. But at that time I was 3 pushes away from my son being delivered.

Thank you Nancy THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!

Could be the only book you need to read if you are pregnant 11. Juli 2012

This book has the potential to cause a real shift away from the fear that has come to surround childbirth. By teaching tools to cope with whatever comes up in the birth process, Mindful Birthing is offering a way for couples to trust themselves to be able to work with whatever happens. In contrast to the movement of "trusting your body" or trusting the process" which can set people up for a feeling of failure, Mindful Birthing offers an alternative which can serve people throughout pregnancy, birth and parenting. And really throughout the rest of their lives. Beautifully and truthfully written, with no romance and no fluff. Highly recommended.

An accessible book on an important subject 13. August 2012
Von K. Campos - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

I truly believe that this is the best book that I have read to prepare me for labor, birth and beyond. It is important for me to have a birth plan that is based in research. The birthing class that Bardacke outlines in the book is a modification of Jon Kabat-Zinn's mindfulness based stress reduction (MBSR) program, which is an evidence-based intervention. In addition, mindful birthing is starting to have research backing as well!

I finished reading the book last week and have begun the mindful meditations - as part of the preparation the author urges you to commit to at least 30 minutes/day 6 days/week of meditation practice. The skills that I am learning will be applicable way beyond my daughter's birth day. I also purchased the "mindfulness for pregnancy" app for my iPhone, which includes some brief guided meditations and personalized practices. In addition, I was told that they are going to release an audio version of the guided meditation on iTunes at the end of August and am looking forward to that.

In general, I strongly recommend this book for anyone looking to learn with a natural way to cope with the pain and stress of pregnancy, childbirth and parenting.

UPDATE: I used mindful birthing during labor and delivery and received countless comments from my midwife, lactation consultants and nurses about how different my approach was than other women. They have begun to recommend this approach to other moms-to-be. Also, I am continuing to practice mindfulness meditation and it is an invaluable tool as a parent.

The most helpful thing I read for both childbirth and parenting! 24. Februar 2013
Von TKWG - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

I am a labor and delivery nurse and I read a lot of books about childbirth before giving birth. I was doing a self-hypnosis course as well to prepare myself for a natural delivery. I didn't get this book until I was 36 weeks pregnant. However, it was STILL the most helpful way I prepared for my labor - I put so much less time and effort into it than I did with my hypnosis and it was still amazing for me. I like that it doesn't involve any "magic" states --- there's no "doing it right" -- only "doing." I constantly visualized the images from the book during my labor and reminded myself that I only had to do "this one contraction" - not think about how many had come before or how many would come afterward. It was truly invaluable.

After our baby was born, I realized how much time I had dedicated to childbirth preparation/reading, and how little to parenting preparation. Suddenly the parenting portion of the book because my best friend. It was amazing what a lifesaver it was. I feel that's something other forms of childbirth preparation lack -- the ability to be incredibly useful for birth, parenting, and life!

(BTW, I didn't get to take a class - this book was so clearly and well-written that I felt I still received the benefit of the class.)
(Also, BTW, the book did help me achieve my goal of a natural delivery - but Nancy helps you learn not to be attached to that, which is so awesome!)

I can't say enough times, buy the book. It will be the best investment you make for you and for your family!

A great resource for expectant moms 1. Juli 2013
Von M. Penton - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
I had a baby 8 month's ago and read this book last year in preparation for my planned homebirth. I read a number of books about birth, home birth, babies, etc (Ina Mae's Guide to Childbirth, Natural Pregnancy by Aviva Romm, and several others). I found this book to be very balanced, informative and useful when the time came to have my baby. I thought it was great for preparation for any kind of birth (hospital, birth center or home) and felt that Nancy was a true friend writing to me. I also used her Meditation CD's and highly recommend them! Thank you for this wonderful resource for expectant mother's!

p.s. I actually read this on my kindle and would recommend getting the print book. She has lots of instructions in the book and I found myself wanting to flip back through the pages or reference one page many times - I think I would have liked it a lot better in print. :)
