This book has a lot of information and the way it's written is just wholeheartedly beautiful. You will never find such a beautiful historical as this. Truly a masterpiece. It has nearly all of the Orders. It starts with explaining chivalry and the medieval world and then begins with the Hospitallers, Templars and one of my favorite stories, the Teutonic Knights.

It also has the other Spanish Orders. But they're rather short. If you want information on those, you'll nee to find elsewhere.

The Military Religions Orders of the Middle Ages by F.C. Woodhouse

This book deals with some of the history and exploits of the religious orders of fighting monks which originated in the times of the Crusades. The first two thirds of the book is devoted to the Knights Hospitilars, a combined nursing and fighting order which existed for several centuries, eventually ending as a sort of honorary society for upper class Englishmen of noble lineage. Accounts of their many battles are given in much detail, with text often lifted in its entirety from rather vaguely attributed sources. The account of the Knights Templar is rather less detailed. There is little written about their exploits during the Crusades than the masterminding of the demise of the Order by King Philip the Fair who needed the supposed wealth derived by the Templars from their banking system. Almost every knight in the Order was burned alive after torture by the Inquisition. The Teutonic Knights another order of fighting monks formed to accommodate the German speaking Crusader, who following the end of the Crusades turned their attention to subduing the pagans of Prussia and the Baltic countries. A few paragraphs toward the end of the book deal with Spanish, Portuguese, and other knightly orders.

My first thought when I started reading this book was that I would be dealing with a scholarly, well- researched history of the military religious orders and how they functioned during the Crusades. I quickly realized that what I was reading seemed aimed more at young schoolboys most probably in parochial schools. From the writing style I deduced that the author must be a Victorian. I have not been able to find any biography of him, but did notice that one of his many books was published in 1884. His writing style ranges from pale lavender to deep purple prose. He refers to the Muslims as the Mohammed Men and devotes many pages to their savagery. The savagery of th Christian conquerors of Jerusalem during the first Crusade is not mentioned. His hatred of the Turks is deep and abiding. His accounts of many of the public figures of the times is confusing, since he frequently neglects to mention just who he is referring to. Sometimes he names a Pope, but more often he simply says the Pope. He follows the same style with kings and there was frequent mention of fsomeone referred to simply as the Emperor .

People wanting a more scholarly approach to those times may find this book interesting as a curiosity. Otherwise, I recommend it for boys between the ages of ten and thirteen, with the caveat that parents may find some of the tales too gory.

All three orders discussed here fought in the crusades to get the holy land back from muslims, losing all but the first and sixth ones. the Templars especial downfall was being burnt at the stake as heretics. An essential piece of Christian history.
