Traditionally seen as one of Shakespeare's more romantic and enchanting plays, A Midsummer Night's Dream has more recently been seen as a darker and more sinister play than generations of schoolchildren have ever imagined. The play has usually been seen as a comical tale and confused identities and the fickleness of youthful love, as the young lovers, Lysander, Hermia, Demetrius and Helena escape parental control and the "sharp Athenian law" of their elders by eloping into the forest outside the city. Unfortunately they stumble into civil war in fairyland, where King Oberon and Queen Titania fight over possession of a beautiful young Indian "changeling" boy. The appearance of the "rude mechanicals", a group of Athenian workers, including the weaver Nick Bottom, compounds the confusion. Chaos, confusion and "shaping fantasies" reign before the final settlement of the play, but underneath all the hilarity many critics have discerned more ambivalent attitudes towards coercive parental control, bestial sexuality and the destructive power of desire. These approaches in no way detract from the exquisite lyricism of many sections of the play, but make it a more complex and effective comedy than has often been appreciated. --Jerry Brotton

Aus der Reihe "The Arden Shakespeare" habe ich die Ausgabe von William Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream", herausgegeben von H.F. Brooks erhalten. Das Buch habe ich gebraucht gekauft und es ist in einem tadellosen Zustand.
Zusätzlich zum Dramentext gibt es in dieser Ausgabe eine ausführliche Einleitung und auf jeder Textseite viele Erklärungen zur Sprache und zum Sprachgebrauch.
Am Ende finden sich weitere Angaben zu Quellen und besonderen Textstellen. Für Studenten, die sich intensiv mit einem Shakespearedrama befassen wollen, würde ich immer eine Arden-Ausgabe empfehlen. Von diesem Stück habe ich bereits eine Penguin-Ausgabe, aber für eine schriftliche Arbeit werde ich diese Ausgabe benutzen, da sie qualitativ hochwertig ist.

Probably, the only reason I can not give this 5 stars is because I was spoiled by Shakespeare's "The Comedy of Errors." This is a sparkling piece of art. It is easy to see how Greek Mythology inspired Shakespeare. The Greek gods have human desires, impulses, and weaknesses. And often, their people suffer because of them. In this play, several characters are hindered (although unintentionally) by the bickering Oberon and Titania. It is easy to see the similarities between Zeus and Hera. The play also offers situation comedy, young lovers, frustrated parents, sparkling images, and a happy ending. CAUTION-ENTER THIS MYSTICAL WONDERLAND AT YOUR OWN RISK.

I disagree with the reader who said there is no substance in this play. Certainly, all works of good literature have substance, espcially this one. One of the great aspects of A Midsummer Night's Dream is the fantasy that the characters are led to believe. Compare this to As You Like It, where the only fantasy is the fantasy that characters want to believe.
