'The Third Edition breaks much new ground from the earlier editions, incorporating many new ideas on the verb, from the author's research. This book encourages the reader to consider the ancient language as a means of expression and not just a set of grammatical rules.' Nigel Strudwick, Fitzwilliam Museum, University of Cambridge

'Professor Allen has once again demonstrated his mastery of the ancient Egyptian language by providing a new edition of his grammar that is fresh and daring.' Ronald J. Leprohon, University of Toronto

'A user-friendly introduction teeming with novel insights; essential reading for all students and researchers in Egyptology.' Sami Uljas, Uppsala University

'This new edition of Middle Egyptian, completely revised, makes complex grammatical issues with which students often struggle far more accessible. It will also be of interest to those fascinated by the language but who come to it from outside Egyptology.' Troy Leiland Sagrillo, Swansea University

'This third, thoroughly revised edition, of the most successful teaching grammar of Middle Egyptian provides an integrated, step-by-step introduction to the script, language, and culture of the classical period of ancient Egypt, leading the student to a direct experience of the original texts. Written by one of the most distinguished scholars in the field and richly exemplified, the text is equally suited for the classroom and for self-study.' Andréas Stauder, Swiss National Science Foundation and Universität Basel

Über das Produkt

The first two editions of this book have become the most popular means of teaching and learning the ancient Egyptian writing system, language, and culture. This new edition incorporates the latest advances in our understanding of the language and is both simpler and easier to use.

Kindle version won't solve small faint glyphs problems with print version 1. August 2014
Von Booker - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
This is a short note on the quality of the Kindle version of the book, not of Allen's otherwise great Egyptian grammar book.

For many readers, the size and ink used for the hieroglyphs in the printed text are disappointingly small and faint. I was hoping that these two issues would be addressed in the Kindle version, but they're not.

You can resize the English text, but the glyphs are not resizable - and they have the same faint look they have in the printed text.

So, don't buy the Kindle version expecting it solve the readability issues that you may have with the print version.

This is the fault of the publisher, Cambridge University Press. One would expect that a publishing house attached to such a prestigious university should be able to produce better quality print books than this.

his updated approach to the verbal system in this 3rd edition is especially useful. Cambridge University Press (like Oxford) is 24. Januar 2015

Book gets *****/*****. Cambridge University Press gets */*****.

Simply put Allen is the teaching grammar for Middle Egyptian, his updated approach to the verbal system in this 3rd edition is especially useful.

Cambridge University Press (like Oxford) is simply a joke. The quality of the binding/print is an insult to Allen and to the customer. The glyphs are non-consistent sometimes appearing semi-bold sometimes faint and in the glossary the end of the final glyph of many entries is often cut off. The text has too little of an inner margin and often section and paragraph numbers go into the gutter. The paper is also of low quality and curls very easily.

The major academic presses have become a travesty. I have Cambridge and Oxford books from the 50s that are in far better condition after a half century of use than books printed two years ago.

This is the first book I'd recommend if asked 28. Februar 2015
Von Kba - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch
This is the first book I'd recommend if asked, and am sorry problems with the kindle version are hurting its star rating. This book is thorough introduction, with exercises, and is written without assuming a great deal of prior knowledge on the part of the student. There are roughly three groups of books on the language--ice breakers, advanced discussions, and a handful of textbooks. Gardiner's textbook, "Egyptian Grammar", published around 1927, is the grandfather to the later textbooks; Allen's books is organized similarly to Gardiner, while reflecting later developments and not assuming as much prior knowledge.

Content of course is excellent but my copy at least is defective 22. Februar 2015
Von Carole - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
Content of course is excellent but my copy at least is defective. Print on many of the sign and dictionary pages is inconsistent and light so that some of the glyphs are almost unreadable. I do not know if it is just my copy. It is very annoying when I am using those pages. Text pages seem to be fine so of course it is the issue of the hassle to return the book when it is just the Appendix pages.
I have worked with Allen's first edition which I really enjoyed so am pleased to have this update. He also has a companion literature book which I bought and am enjoying.

A remarkably good language course 8. Oktober 2014
Von Amazon Customer - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch
I agree that the Kindle version is awkward and ugly, though it's ultimately usable on my Android tablet.

The book itself, however, is excellent. It's the best "traditional-style" language course I've ever had the pleasure of reading for any language. The explanations are easily accessible, and demand no specialized knowledge. The examples are plentiful. And I can find clear explanations of difficult constructions, including many that can normally only be found in dense reference grammars.
