Von The Tester TOP 500 REZENSENT am 2. Oktober 2014
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
If you have good basic knowledge on Microsoft generic Office Products and you don't want to dig into too many details, the 'plain & simple' book series might be exactly what you're searching for.

The philosophy here is simple, too. Less text, more pictures; describe a feature in two or three sentences, that's it. The most important facts and limitations of SharePoint 2010 are also explained, e.g. 'maximum amount of items on a list', 'maximum co-editors of a document' etc. All this provides a great help during the first steps on a SharePoint. However, you must be willing to experiment and the book leaves a lot of questions open, especially if you intend to do more than using everyday standard features.

The typical audience of the 'plain & simple' series is end-users who are using a SharePoint that has been fully prepared by an administrator and thus don't want to be bothered with too many details. Do not expect an admin-guide or a comprehensive reference here.

The downside is, even for beginners, that information is sometimes difficult to find in this booklet. The booklet is designed like a story-book that requires to be read from the first page to the end. Hence it does not contain too many pages and also not too many text, plain & simple, literally.

Having said this, I recommend trying the "Inside Out" book series, even as a beginner. These books offer a lot more value for money; they are more structured and contain ALL the knowledge, from beginner's to advanced level.

A must have for those learning SharePoint 2010 24. Februar 2011
Von Lily - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
I am a recent Computer Science graduate and decided that SharePoint was the product to learn.
I started with more advanced SharePoint books but made little progress because they had little introduction and were complex in early chapters.

I purchased Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Plain & Simple: Learn the simplest ways to get things done with Microsoft SharePoint 2010 and worked my way through the exercises. What I found is that the other reading I've done in SharePoint makes sense now because this book clearly explains the usability in simple terms.
This book gets right to the point of what SharePoint 2010 can do for Designers. It has excellent step by step instructions along with color coded graphics.

As a result of this, I am able to go to more advanced books and make progress.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone using or learning SharePoint 2010.

I give this book a solid 5 out of 5.

Want to learn about SharePoint at your own pace? - this is how to do it 10. Januar 2011
Von David W - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
Let me first start with what this book is not. I'ts not an in-depth, complete book on SharePoint 2010. it starts off with 'What's New in 2010', then, goes from Getting Started and Organizing chapters, all the way to security and search. It covers quite a lot of areas, over-all.

That being said, it is an excellent book on what it is. It is a very good map for those who just want the facts - for those who want to learn about SharePoint without having to be a developer or an Administrator. Plain & Simple provides a map, if you will of some of the major points of SharePoint, how to get there, what it looks like when you get there and what it does once you're there.

Along with the pictures (screenshots), tips, descriptions for each area, this book provides a lot of good information in a short space, including information about Security and SharePoin search. It doesn't overwhelm you with a lot of in-depth text, so this isn't a full-blown, get to know everything there is about SharePoint kind of book, but it allows you to get a good feeling for SharePoint and what it does, and at the same time, it shows you how to do it.

Must have for SharePoint 2010 designers 4. Februar 2011
Von BcCatz - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
I found this book informative and helpful in all the site collection duties. Setting permissions, working with templates, lists, workspaces, look and feel, etc. As a site collection's admin, without any previous instruction, you could get a site up and running by just using this book. It seems to covers it all.

It does not, however, cover any Farm Admin duties. This looks to be strictly for designers and not for disaster recovery, site collection creation, shared services or any other Farm admin duties. It would be great if there were a Plain and Simple for those duties!

Designers should defintely have this book.

This is the book I recommend to my users 13. Dezember 2012

Format: Taschenbuch
I'm a SharePoint specialist at a Fortune 500 company - I've helped well over 100 people get started with SharePoint and this is the first and only book I recommend.

There are so many reasons I like it -
It is not a very thick book and thats a good thing - When anyone is getting started with SharePoint, it can be pretty intimidating - the last thing a user needs is a 500+ page book they will never read.

The Book is well laid out, and printed in full color - each section is color coded and there are screenshots on nearly every page.

The book uses a step by step, 1) 2) 3) format for teaching - this extends to the screenshots, in which the steps are clearly marked by small numbers so that it is easy to follow along.

Another huge benefit, is that this book is really affordable - so much so that I never get any resistance from users and many have proudly brought their books with them to the Q&A sessions we hold at work!

Excellent and concise information for SharePoint users... 29. Oktober 2011
Von Thomas Duff - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
This would be the book I'd love to see in the hands of all our employees at work... Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Plain & Simple: Learn the simplest ways to get things done with Microsoft SharePoint 2010 By Johnathan Lightfoot and Chris Beckett. As we get ready to move from SharePoint 2007 to SharePoint 2010, one of the biggest concerns we have is training people on the changes. To be honest, trying to hook up current SharePoint users with concise how-to information is also a struggle. Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Plain & Simple overcomes that with most everything someone would need to know to get the most out of SharePoint 2010 as an end user or power user.

Contents:
About This Book; What's New and Improved in SharePoint 2010?; Getting Started with SharePoint Sites; Organizing and Managing Information; List and Library Essentials; Working with Documents; Working with Media; Using Information Management Policies; Organizing People and Work; Using SharePoint with Office 2010; Collaborating with Blogs; Security Within SharePoint 2010; Using Personal Sites and Social Networking; Searching for Information; Index

This was my first exposure to the Plain & Simple series, and I can understand why they work so well. Printed in full color, they focus on the essential tasks that a person would want to accomplish with a piece of software. A brief explanation of the feature is followed by step-by-step instructions on the task. In addition, there are numerous information "bubbles" throughout, targeting tips, things to try out, references to additional information, and cautions to remember. If someone is motivated to read and try things out, then this book provides an excellent framework for those activities, making sure that all the essentials tasks and features are covered in a structured manner.

As a developer who works with SharePoint, this was also quite useful. I got a good feeling for some of the new SharePoint 2010 features, as well as pointers for existing features that have been improved. As I was reading, I was already making a mental list of enhancements to some of the projects I've built over the last year or so. I'm also going to start writing SharePoint tips for our company intranet, and the content here will give me a good framework for what content should be covered, as well as the order I should use to write about them.

I have another Plain & Simple book I'm working through as a user (OneNote 2010), and I'm finding it just as useful as the SharePoint 2010 book. All in all, I would definitely recommend Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Plain & Simple be available (in quantities) for your end users when you move to SharePoint 2010. The money spent will be more than paid back with increased productivity and happier users.
