The critics of this book fail to mention the fact that if you are a graduate economics student you must be able to grasp the mathematical concepts utilized in this book. (Which are not as monstrous as some reviewers seem to think. Real Analysis, for example, is not needed to get through any important chapter). It (this book) may be dense and lacking explanatory power in terms of intuitive statements, but it certainly is the only graduate textbook which could principally be used as a stand-alone text for a complete Micro sequence. For example, Kreps' book treats 3/4 of its relevant material in exercises. Varians' text has even less wording about it than this one. If someone criticises this book on the grounds of its mathematical sophistication he is basically criticising what modern Microeconomics amounts to. As noted by another reviewer the section on Individual Decision Making is fabulous. The same, in my opinion, can be said of the section on General Equilibrium. The Game Theory chapters are very simple, but still concise, likewise the two chapters on Information Economics. Furthermore, there are three very good (but difficult) chapters on Welfare Economics and Incentives, topics hardly treated in any other textbook.

I like the book, it's certainly rigorous and explains the concepts reasonably well, at an advanced level. I have little to add to the other reviewers' comments on that.
I'd like to add that this textbook is definitely the most carefully produced I own. Even though it's in its first ed. there are very few typos. More importantly, the layout is very convincing. Even complex graphs are are clearly and beautifully drawn, the typesetting is 100% consistent throughout the book.
OK, you might say what the heck? But I regrettably have to admit that I currently spend as much time with "MWG" as with my girlfriend. So, I learnt to appreciate that it looks as good as she does (in relative terms: for a book compared to other books as her compared to other women, that is). All of you who still remember Greene's 4th ed (the blue letters...) will agree with me that a well-produced book is something to which some attention should be paid!

Mas-Colell et al.'s Micro Theory is the only truly comprehensive graduate text in Microeconomics. I found it dense and unecessarily burdened by set theory when I first attempted reading it in the first year of grad school. Yet by the end of the year I found its level and depth to be just right.
Kreps' Micro Theory is too conversational to be truly considered a graduate text, but it can be a good read at the begining of your first year. Overall, I think Mas Colell is the better book because its treatment has more depth and balance. Mas Colell's other competitor Varian's Micro Analysis sadly falls short on both those categories.
I would only fault Mas Collel et al. for, in many cases, spending half a page defining things in terms of superfluous variables and sets when a two line word definintion would suffice.

Too dificult

Microeconomic Theory or an unreadable "Bible"?

It's too darned big
