Kurzbeschreibung

Life in a small town can be tricky. Laid-back Glory Eiben learned long ago that keeping personal information and opinions to herself goes a long way toward staying hassle free in her chosen home town. Much adored by the residents, she’s maintained the life she’s always wanted with good friends, close family, and a successful career. For someone with a rare congenital heart defect, this life is more than she could have hoped for.

Leaving behind big city excitement, a demanding position, and a failed relationship, Lena Coleridge thinks this small ski town may be exactly what she needs to come back from her wit’s end. She didn’t think that job politics or social landmines would exist in such a small town. Keeping to herself won’t be an option with these nosy locals. It doesn’t help that she lives next door to one of the more popular residents who seems too easy going and nice to be true. Friendship is inevitable, but as she gets to know Glory, friendship isn’t the only thing on her mind. After her last relationship, Lena doesn’t want anything to do with another complication, and dating her neighbor could definitely get complicated.

Glory, who suffers from a serious congenital heart defect, befriends her new neighbor, Lena, the new principal of the local high school.

"Mending Defects" is a nice story with likable characters, but not one of Lynn Galli's best. It seemed a bit too short. Some of the issues could have been explored more deeply.

The book is written mainly from Glory’s first-person POV, interspersed with diary entries from Lena. Personally, I didn’t care much for the diary style storytelling, but don’t let that stop you from reading the book. You might enjoy it.

There were a few editing issues, but nothing that made me want to stop reading the book.

5.0 von 5 Sternen tugs at the heart strings 12. November 2011

I was really excited to see a new Lynn Galli book and even though I went in with some pretty high expectations I was not disappointed. Mending Defects is a fantasic read with some beautiful humour and the odd scene that might bring a tear to your eye (yeah, so I'm a big cry-baby!).

The cast of characters is wonderful and diverse, and Galli has interwoven their stories perfectly. Attention is never diverted from Lena and Glory's developing friendship but we are able to see how the lives of their friends and family, and their careers, and their pasts have shaped them.

The story is well paced. Their relationship develops realistically and despite the obstactles they have to overcome there is none of the overly dramatic lesbian angst that I personally find irritating in some novels in this genre.

And the biggy for me in recommending this is that even though Galli has written a good number of books there is nothing repetitive here and no re-hashing of similar characters or the same old storyline repeating itself. I loved getting to know Lena and Glory and was captivated by their story.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Nothing defective about this book 15. November 2011

Accountant Glory Eiben knows what life is like living in a small town. Nothing is sacred, no detail of anyone's personal lives goes unmentioned and unnoticed. Glory is a much loved and well respected member of the small ski town community. She has a loving family, a wide circle of friends and a successful accountancy business. Glory has also had a heart defect all her life. She survived to adulthood against all odds and up until now, she never thought she would have a future.

Lena Coleridge arrives in town and moves in right next door to Glory. Lena has left a broken relationship and the big city school she was Principal of to become Principal of the small school in Aspen. Lena thinks she can slide in under the radar and keep herself to herself, but she has another think coming. Not in this small town.

When Glory and Lena meet, both women are wary. Lena is reluctant to begin a friendship with Glory. But soon decides she more than likes Glory. But Lena can't allow herself to have another disastrous relationship and pulls back. Will Lena relent and allow herself to love again?

Glory more than likes Lena, but a relationship is another thing altogether. What about Glory's heart defect? Can Glory allow herself to trust again after receiving two knock backs in the past?

I love Lynn Galli's books and this one is no exception. The book completely captivated me from the very beginning. There is a serious element to this story of a young woman with heart problems. Yet Lynn Galli has put the story across with sympathy and understanding. The story is told with a lovely humor throughout without taking away the seriousness of Glory's illness. The way this book has been written can only be described by me as like being on the outside looking in at the scenes unfolding. A wonderfully written story that ended far too soon. I would dearly love to see a sequel with these characters. They have a lot more to offer

5.0 von 5 Sternen Loved This Book 14. November 2011

I've read two other books by Lynn Galli, and this novel was just as fabulous as the others. Galli's novels always have a way of making you laugh one moment, gushing the next. The main character is sarcastic, witty, and so loveable in that stubborn, difficult way. If you've ever looked at the Q&A on the author's website, you can definitely see some of her personality in her characters. I wish I could meet her in person. Not just because she is an amazing writer, but because she's interesting and intriguing, as are her characters. The main characters, Glory and Lena, slowly fall in love despite past heartaches, stubbornness, and Glory's heart condition.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Not your usual romance topic 12. Januar 2012
Von MJS - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

This isn't Galli's best book, but it's a fun read, I like stories that tackle issues outside the norm. This book had two topics going on, Glory's condition and Lena being a the principal of the local high school. The high school storyline was handled quite well and I found the portrayal of all the different reactions to Lena's lesbianism well done. The romance between Glory and Lena was fun, the dialogue smart and witty, and I'd have given this book 4 stars if not for the reason below:

************ spoilers below ***********

Glory's (incomprehensible) refusal to discuss her heart condition with Lena, even after they become involved, is just ridiculous, there's no way anyone would go in to hospital to have surgery without telling someone who is such a close friend, let alone the woman you almost slept with a few days before and who has clearly stated that she needs the relationship to be based on equality and honesty. Even when Glory gets out of hospital they still don't really talk about it even though Lena makes it obvious she wants to know. I could understand it at the start of the book, but as you see the two of them grow closer, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

The rest of the story is a fun read though, and the characters (both main and supporting) are well fleshed out, so its worth a read.

5.0 von 5 Sternen The friendship is what sold me 30. September 2013

I really enjoy Lynn Galli's work because it is so character driven. She takes wonderful locations and makes them part of the story in a alluring way, but it is the characters who make me keep picking up her work. Mending Defects is no different. The story of Glory and Lena, that kicks off the Aspen Friends series, are beautiful in their simple complexities. Glory, fighting for the dignity of living a life without people looking at her as damaged and disabled, Lena, wanting to be treated with respect and love for who she is and not for her money. Many stories include the friendship between the two main characters as a means to leading them into a romantic plot, however, though the same happened in Mending Defects, Lynn Galli's ability to nail the intricacies of friendship, the give and take of information, the trust, the revelations and the acceptance created a whole new level of believability. By the time their relationship did move to the next level, there was absolutely no doubt in my mind that they considered each other their absolute best friend. In my opinion that is what makes this book so wonderful and why I would recommend it and any other Lynn Galli work to readers.
