"This book has been a definitive reference on space planning of medical and dental facilities for decades. Its timely new edition will keep designers and practitioners ahead of the challenging developments transforming today's healthcare facilities and practices."
—Bill Rostenberg, FAIA, FACHA

"The field of advanced reproductive technology is relatively new. This book is the first to detail the complexities of designing to meet clinical needs and the maze of compliance issues."
—David Smotrich, MD, La Jolla IVF.

Medical and Dental Space Planning is an indispensable guide to the myriad of details that make a medical or dental practice efficient and productive. The unique needs of more than thirty specialties, as well as primary care, are explained in the context of new technology and the many regulatory and compliance issues influencing design. Concepts are also presented for ambulatory surgical centers, diagnostic imaging, clinical laboratories, breast care clinics, endoscopy centers, community health centers, radiation oncology, and single-specialty and multispecialty group practices and clinics. A thorough review of the latest dental technology and many creative space plans and design ideas for each dental specialty will be of interest to both dentists and design professionals. Important topics like infection control are top of mind, influencing every aspect of dental office design.

An "inside look" at what goes on in each specialist's office will familiarize readers with medical and dental procedures, how they are executed, and the types of equipment used. Technology has radically impacted medical and dental practice: digital radiography, electronic health records, mobile health devices, point-of-care diagnostic testing, digital diagnostic instrumentation, CAD/CAM systems for digital dental impressions and milling of restorations in the dentist's office, portable handheld X-ray, and 3D cone beam computed tomography for dentists all have major implications for facility design.

The influence of the Affordable Care Act is transforming primary care from volume-based to value-based, which has an impact on the design of facilities, resulting in team collaboration spaces, larger consultative examination/assessment rooms, and accommodation for multidisciplinary practitioners who proactively manage patient care, often in a patient-centered medical home context.

The wealth of information in this book is organized to make it easy to use and practical. Program tables accompany each medical and dental specialty to help the designer compute the number and sizes of required rooms and total square footage for each practice. This handy reference can be used during interviews for a "reality check" on a client's program or during space planning. Other features, for example, help untangle the web of compliance and code issues governing office-based surgery.

Illustrated with more than 600 photographs and drawings, Medical and Dental Space Planning is an essential tool for interior designers and architects as well as dentists, physicians, and practice management consultants.

The job is tough. This book works. 17. Juli 2014
Von Joe Flower - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe
Planning healthcare spaces is tough. It’s complex, involving aesthetics, the economics that drive the use of the space, the clinical knowledge — not only what works for the clinicians’ workflow but how design actually influences patients’ health, how new technologies are changing workflows and creating new flexibilities, all that. It’s not a task for amateurs. Yet many who are involved in planning healthcare spaces, from general architects and engineers to healthcare executives and clinical committees, are not really professionals at it.

Malkin’s book is the bedrock of the practice, bringing the depth of long experience and study to bear on all the multiple aspects of the problem, as they play out in the variety of spaces across healthcare, from labs to reception areas, from exam rooms to surgical suites. Malkin covers it with great clarity, assuredness, and directness, bereft of jargon and academic obscurantism. This is a comprehensive, working book which should be on the shelf of anyone who has to tackle this problem set.

This is a great update to the previous edition 10. Juli 2014

This is a great update to the previous edition. Glad to see there are additional information in regards to the LEED process, as many commercial space are moving in that direction. We actually used the 3rd edition as a reference before proceeding with the construction of our space a few years ego. I especially appreciated the detailed information in regards to the suppliers and all the vendors that were used in each space. Honestly, this is the most comprehensive book when it comes to planning any healthcare facility, whether its for a space as large as children's hospital or a small private office.

Everyone on your team needs to read this book before you start any healthcare building project 21. Juli 2014
Von Avein Saaty-Tafoya MD MBA HCM EDAC - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe Verifizierter Kauf
This edition is much more than a reference. It is both guidebook and workbook as your team sorts through the planning process for a healthcare capital project. It does not matter how large or small your particular building may be. You could have one service line or a comprehensive site with core services and ancillary services all under one roof. Jain will take you through it painlessly one step at a time. Ambulatory care is the focus of the future of health policy as national goals are centered around increased access to care, lowering costs, and ultimately to demonstrate improvements in the health outcomes of those we serve. The environment of care is more critical than ever as the structures we build drive these functions and the business of healthcare. Going through the many well documented best practices in this book and the myriad ways others have solved complex challenges gives you a roadmap forward. With Jain's guidance we can shift our perspective to look at medical and dental spaces as vessels that can support our daily work and strategically position our organizations for success within the transformation of healthcare.
