using/editing configuration files

Surely you have heard of Wikipedia? That online encyclopedia has been a stunning success. Behind it was the MediaWiki engine. That is endorsement enough to have a serious look at MediaWiki. Also, many other websites have taken MediaWiki and modified it for their needs.
What this book does is given an elementary tour of MediaWiki. Starting with how to get and install it. Then various chapters go into the many customisations possible. You learn that MediaWiki sits atop a database [default=MySQL] and uses PHP as its coding language. The book deliberately does not elaborate on the theory of relational databases or the syntax of MySQL. Ditto for the syntax of PHP. The focus is plainly on MediaWiki. We have to be practical here. Otherwise we would be looking at several hundred more pages on peripheral topics.
MediaWiki uses several configuration files, and the book gives examples of how to edit these to change the look and feel of your website. There are some sample SQL statements, of considerable complexity, and some sample PHP code. These hint tantalisingly at many more involved possibilities.
But the book is mostly about the editing of configuration files. As for the logic that uses those files, and how you might change that logic, that is reserved for other books. Perhaps by the current authors, as an Advanced Guide?
Along these lines, a related book, MediaWiki Skins Design: Designing attractive skins and templates for your MediaWiki site, might be interesting to some readers. It goes further into how the skins [aka. look and feel] can be tweaked for your purposes.

A Worthwhile Guide to Save Your Time

This is a concise and practical guide that steps the reader through all the basics of setting up and running a MediaWiki site. It is a hands-on, learn-by-example book. It will take the reader through installation, creating user accounts, creating content, formatting content, adding media, organizing content, security, managing editing conflicts, customization, back-up, and extensions. Integration with WordPress, Joomla! and Moodle are also covered. While the subject of customizing MediaWiki's skin takes a whole book of its own to cover properly (see MediaWiki Skins Design, also from Packt Publishing), it is briefly covered in one chapter of this book. If you will be spending any time administering a wiki of your own, it is worthwhile to get this book rather than relying on the free MediaWiki documentation that is available on the web.

Jeff Orloff delivers the I.T. goods...AGAIN!!

As baseball analogies go, "Orloff hits it out of the park...another Grand Slam!"
I loved Jeff Orloff's, "How to Do Everything Ubuntu." In his new book, "A Beginner's Guide to Media Wiki," he is a teacher in the true-sense of the word; Explaining complicated terms/concepts & laying out great visuals, all the while making deep connections that the amateur, software guru can relate to.
In Media Wiki, I like his writing style and use of helpful pics. It's not overloaded with "techie"-lingo hiccups between him and his new co-author, Mizanur Rahman. The two definitely compliment one another and piggy-back off of the success and momentum of "How to Do Everything Ubuntu." There is a shameless USF clipart-reference, but hey...who else is going to contend from FL, Miami? Ha.
He keeps it simple and concise. Nice. Very nice!
Overall, I give "A Beginner's Guide to Media Wiki" 5 stars!
