Convoluted intrigues, rivalries and romance provide an entertaining tangle in the second book in Australian fantasy author Fallon's Hythrun Chronicles (after Medalon). The rebellion led by Tarja Tenragen and his half-sister R'shiel against their mother, the ruler of Medalon, has succeeded, but not without costs. Medalon is threatened by neighboring Karien and internally torn by those still loyal to the fallen First Sister of the Blade. Sorely wounded R'shiel (half-human and half-demon) lies in the hands of the legendary Harshini healers—but the Harshini have their own agenda, and the race's prohibition against violence doesn't prevent them from manipulating others to do their killing. While a recovering R'shiel is groomed to destroy the fundamentalist Kariens' god Xaphista, Tarja allies with dashing Damin Wolfblade, Warlord of Krakandar, and settles into Treason Keep to prepare for a Karien attack. Meanwhile, Hablet of Fardohnya sends his strong-willed daughter Adrina to forge an alliance with Karien by wedding crown prince Cratyn. Although the fates of Tarja and R'shiel form the series heart, Damin and Adrina are the heart of this exciting story, accompanied by a large cast of compelling characters. While new readers may have trouble getting up to speed initially, their patience will be well rewarded; fans arriving straight from book one can dive right in.

The Sisters of the Blade, backed by warriors known as the Defenders, have ruled Medalon for two centuries, forbidding pagan worship or belief in any god. The people of Karien, to the north, are fanatic worshipers of a single god, and to the south, fervent belief in the heathen gods prevails. Eighteen-year-old R'shiel has long fought her coldhearted mother's domination, but her half-brother, Tarja, is a colonel in the Defenders. When their mother becomes First Sister, however, the two defy her machinations and, forced to flee for their lives, get caught up in a rebellion against the Sisterhood. Also part of the mix are the mysterious Harshini, who were assumed to be extinct, and the gods themselves, who readily mix in human affairs as they search for the Demon Child they had created to destroy an evil god. In her first novel, beginning the Hythrun Chronicles, Australian author Fallon conjures a viable, richly detailed world and its disparate societies. Characterizations, including those of the interfering gods, are well realized, and the suspense is palpable throughout. Sally Estes

When the gods created the Harshini, they gave them vast powers, but curbed them with the inability to do violence. Only a so called "Demonchild", a half breed of the royal té Ortyn line, would be able to kill a god. Thing is, that the compulsive pacifism of the Harshini almost led to their extinction and the survivors have long since retreated into hiding.Now the time for a new Demonchild has arisen and the gods want to use it for their own purposes ... Medalonians don't believe in Harshini, gods or any other heathen nonsense and the Sisters of the Blade diligently keep it that way. When rumours about the return of the Harshini and a Demonchild are spreading and the neighbouring Kariens threaten to invade, Joyhinia emerges victorious from the political infighting among the Sisters. Only her children, R'shiel and Tarja, see her for the cold-blooded and dangerous woman she really is and their opposition soon puts them in highest danger. Positive things first: MEDALON is, despite its length, fast paced and very entertaining. Especially the gods are absolutely adorable, they strongly remind me of David Edding's Elenium Trilogy (Kalinah/Aphrael, Dace/Talen). Overall it's a good book and the sequels (TREASON KEEP, HARSHINI) are even better. However, there are also some problems. The book twists and turns like a slippery eel, only there aren't any real surprises. Let me clarify. Neither Tarja nor R'shiel commit themselves to any course of action and stumble from one situation into the next. Once a scene is built up, it is destroyed again - with the exception of the "getting caught - escaping game" there's no continuity. On the other hand the cornerstones of the story (the identity of the Demonchild, the evolving love interests ...) are rather predictable. In the end only these cornerstones are of consequence, the rest is padding. Personally, I couldn't get attached to R'shiel, she is too bitter, too irrational. I actually missed the fact that she was raped, because nothing had changed in her behaviour (I thought that she had only been beaten). Tarja is quite cool, but circumstances make him weaker than he should be. My favourites are Damin, Ariana, Brak and Dace, secondary characters who gain shape and importance in the sequels. To enhance the previous recension:I really liked the book a lot. The problems pointed out by hwm (R'Shiel being too bitter, the "getting caught - escaping game") didn't bother me too much, after reading the book I was hungry for more, and the sequels really happen to be a lot better. I can recommed reading the Wolfblade triology first, the storytelling is similar, the charakters are great and it is partially a prequel to the Medalon story. The Wolfblade/Warrior/Warlord triology was a little disturbed by the fact that after reading Medalon/Treason Keep/Harshini you know some things about Damin Wolfblade that makes you anticipate how parts of the story will end.
